Carolyn Grace Curry

Life Legacy


Carolyn Grace Curry, 74, of Columbus, died at 5:52 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012. Carolyn became ill late in 2011 and was diagnosed with cancer in April 2012. She was called to heaven peacefully at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility, surrounded by her family.

Carolyn attended school grades one and two in Providence, Rhode Island, grades five through eleven at Lake Worth, Florida, and grades three, four and twelve in Columbus, Indiana, where she graduated from Columbus High School, which is now Columbus North High School.

She was one of the original Hospice of South Central Indiana volunteers, serving over 30 years before she became ill. Carolyn also helped organize Wings for the Journey, a support group for parents who have lost children and to support children who have lost siblings. As a member of First Baptist Church, Carolyn was a church hostess, served on the Christian Education Board and the Health Cabinet Visitation program. She was a member of Mudlark Garden Club and won several ribbons at the fair, the Herb Society, where she taught classes on cooking with herbs, and various Bible study groups.

Carolyn played Mrs. Claus to her husband Norm's Mr. Claus for 18 years, visiting day care centers, nursing homes, annual parades, the hospital pediatric ward, various churches and charities.

In 2007, Carolyn was chosen as The Republic's Woman of the Year.

She never sought fame or accolades and quietly spent her life serving others.

Carolyn worked in the Bartholomew County Hospital, now Columbus Regional Hospital, kitchen as as a senior in high school and later as a nursing aid. She had also been employed as a dental assistant in Lake Worth, Florida, and Columbus, Indiana, as an activity assistant at Four Seasons Retirement Center, was employed by Lemley Catering and Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation food services and as a hostess for the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.

Born in Providence, Rhode Island, January 12, 1938, Mrs. Curry was the daughter of James William "Bill" Galbraith of Hope and the late Alys Minutilla Galbraith. She married Norman D. Curry July 21, 1970. He survives.

Besides her her father and her husband, Carolyn is survived by children, Kimberly (Tim) Dillingham and James (Kim) Curry; grandchildren, Courtney (Josh) Smith and Emily (Japheth) Phelps; great-grandchildren, Chloie Phelps and Kaydenze Brock; brothers, James Galbraith of Rutledge, Tennessee, and Gary Lee Galbraith of Morristown, Tennessee; and an aunt, Ruth Nordby McCracken of Columbus, Indiana.

She was preceded in death by her mother and a son, Tim Lee Curry.





SERVICES: 2:00 p.m. Saturday August 18, 2012 at First Baptist Church, 3300 Fairlawn Drive, Columbus, IN 47203.

OFFICIATING CLERGY: Rev. Dan Cash

VISITATION: 4:00 P.M. UNTIL 8:00 P.M. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home

ADDITIONAL VISITATION: 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the church
