Evelyn Jeanette Newsom, 90, of Chapa Drive, died at 5:20 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012 at Silver Oaks Health Campus. Evelyn was a graduate of Indiana Business College and worked for the Bartholomew County Treasurer's office in the 1950's. Upon birth of their daughter Gayle, she retired from the courthouse and became the office manager for her husband's farming business. A lifelong Lutheran, she was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Columbus. Over the years she was involved in the Ladies Aid Society and the Home Ec Club at St. Paul Lutheran Church Clifty. Evelyn was born March 14, 1922 in Bartholomew County, the only child of William and Kate Scheidt. She married Maurice Newsom Feb. 6, 1943. Survivors include a daughter, Gayle (Alan) Eiler of Columbus; grandchildren, Brent (Becky) Grider of Columbus and Bryan (Amanda) Sefcik of Gainesville, FL; three beautiful great-granddaughters, Auburn Kay Crider, Jodie Marie Crider and 11-week-old Evelyn Jane Grider. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 46 years.
