James G. Newmister March 09, 1917 - November 01, 2010 James G. Newmister, 93, of South Brooks Street, died at 10:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 2010, at Silver Oaks Health Campus. Mr. Newmister graduated in 1934 from North Vernon High School where he was class president. After high school he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps then, in 1940, became a brakeman for B&0 Railroad. He continued railroad service in the military through the duration of World War II and at the end of the war his train was called to Dachau to remove the skeletal remains of Jewish prisoners. In 2008 he received the Railroad of the Year award in North Vernon. Mr. Newmister came to Columbus in the 1950s, working in local garages and selling insurance. In the 1960s he worked at the Columbus Post Office, retiring from there in 1980. After retirement, he worked part time at Otter Creek Golf Course. He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Columbus Lions Club and the American Legion. He enjoyed golf, fishing, pool, and spending time with friends and family. Born in Stanford, Ill., March 9, 1917, Mr. Newmister was the son of Charles C. and Nellie Luse Newmister. He married Bernice Weber March 18, 1941. Survivors include his wife; sons, Tom (Darice) Newmister of Georgetown, SC, Dave (Kim) Newmister of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Steve (Sherida) Newmister of Clarksville, IN; daughters, Patty Newmister of Columbus, Judy (Jeff) Devening of Columbus, Donna Baroody of Titusville, FL, and Jewell Tessier of Choctaw, OK; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles Bud Newmister of Texas. Funeral Information SERVICES: A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, November 5, at St. Marys Cemetery in North Vernon with Father Jonathan Meyer officiating. CALLING: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at St. Marys Cemetery in North Vernon with military rites conducted by the honor guard from VFW Post No. 2021.
