Robert E. Ogilvie, 82, of West Ridge Drive died at 5:36 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Ogilvie attended Columbus High School where he was nicknamed Tuffy his senior year. He quit school as a senior when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor to join the Navy, serving as a Seaman 1st Class on the Flat Top Bonn Homme Richard in the South Pacific. The ship was parked in Tokyo Bay during surrender ceremonies.
He retired from Pennsylvania Railroad and worked in car sales and, after retirement, tended bar. He was a member of the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge and Shriners in Indianapolis.
Born in Bartholomew County April 16, 1926, Mr. Ogilvie was the son of Elmer E. and Ruth Marie Wray Ogilvie. He married Joan Stewart Oct. 29, 1946.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James F. Ogilvie of Seymour; a daughter, Roberta Jean Dee Dee (James) Fye of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Peggy Hobbs Holston of Avon; a grandson, Jody Johnson; granddaughters, Kristen A. Case, Maria A. Dobbs and Elaine D. Singh; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Wilma Toots Calvin.
Funeral Information
FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Tim Brown officiating.
VISITATION: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until service time Friday. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
