Larry O. Ryser
January 07, 1939 - February 11, 2008
Larry O. Ryser, 69, of Columbus died Feb. 11, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis after a 10-week illness with transverse myelitis.
He was born in Indianapolis and raised in Bloomington. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1957 and from Indiana University in 1961 with a BS in marketing.
After graduation, he proudly served in the U. S. Army from 1961 to 1963 as a 1st Lieutenant.
He joined Cummins Inc. in Columbus in 1966 and retired in 2001 as Director-Corporate Events. His job at Cummins allowed him to travel extensively throughout North America, Europe and Asia.
He maintained his love of travel after retirement and the opportunity it provided to visit friends around the world.
He lent his time and talent to various organizations and events including the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic (having served on the board of directors), Theater Arts Guild, March of Dimes, Pritzker Architectural Awards, Columbus Visitors Center, Urban League visit, Mayo Clinic visit and Culver Academys 100th Anniversary ceremonies.
He enjoyed music all of his life. He was a member of the Singing Hoosiers while attending Indiana University and, for a few years, sang professionally. In 1987, he performed at the noontime Popfest concert with a group of Columbus area Singing Hoosier Alumni. He sang at the weddings of both of his daughters.
His other leisure activities included golf (he was a member of Harrison Lake Country Club), photography, home and garden projects, workouts, reading, cooking, exploring cyberspace and entertaining friends and family.
He subscribed to the philosophy that happy memories are the cushions of life and that the true measure of success is waking up each morning realizing you have a very good life.
He will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, loving son, supportive father, proud grandfather, caring brother and loyal friend, and for his optimism, strength of character, trustworthiness and sense of humor.
Born Jan. 7, 1939, he was the son of Otto and Nellie Ryser. He married Lindsay Lane Aug. 2, 1981.
He is survived by his loving family: wife, Lindsay; mother, Nellie of Bloomington; daughters, Angela Bahling and Dr. Jill (Dr. Michael) Mazurek, both of Indianapolis; grandchildren, Nicholas, Sophie and Emma Mazurek and Micaela Bahling all of Indianapolis; brothers, Terry Ryser of Chicago, Gary (Barbara) and Barry (Jan) Ryser both of Bloomington; and a sister, Beth (John) Workman of Birmingham, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1999.
