Donald H. Peabody, 91, of Central Avenue died at 8 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2007, at Silver Oaks Health Campus.
After graduating from high school in Shakleyville, Pa., Mr. Peabody enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving two years in the Panama Canal Zone. After his discharge from the Army, he joined the Army Air Corps and served as a radio operator in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean during World War II, retiring in 1945 as a first lieutenant.
He attended Grove City College then moved to Columbus with his family in the early 1950s. He worked at Arvin Industries for several years and later was employed by Vernco Inc.
He was a member of East Columbus United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, fishing, camping and woodworking.
Born in Meadville, Pa., Sept. 2, 1915, Mr. Peabody was the son of Walter and Christine Peabody. He married Margarette L. Orr March 28, 1945. She preceded him in death June 4, 2004.
Survivors include sons, William (Lisa) Peabody of Williamstown, Vt., Richard (Donna) Peabody of Burlington, Vt., and Robert (Jane) Peabody of Columbus; and grandchildren, Maegan, Emily, Jessica, Ashley, Michael (Stephanie), Thomas and Rachel Peabody.
Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Peabody and Christine Peabody Dambacher.
Funeral Information
VISITATION: Calling will be Friday July 13, 2007 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home and also Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.
FUNERAL: Saturday July 14, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry McIntosh officiating.
BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery
