Freda Winona Arnold Aikman September 15, 1922 - January 07, 2007 Born in Aurora, Indiana September 15, 1922 to Gorton Milton and Lena Rivers Ashcraft Arnold, Freda was educated at Lawrenceburg High, where she was among the first school majorettes, was a member of the Gregg Writers Club, and later worked at the Greeks restaurant. Her family lost their possessions in the Ohio River flood of 1937 when she was just 15, but persevered and went on to have even better lives. Freda met and married her husband, John Charles Aikman of Terre Haute, Ind., while he was working in Lawrenceburg. There with the help of extended family, she cared for her two young children while John served aboard ship in the United States Navy World War II occupation of Japan. As a young married woman, Mrs. Aikman lived briefly in Los Angeles and later in Terre Haute, Ind., where she held a real estate license and helped her husband to develop subdivisions such as Aikman Place. She also served in parent/teacher organizations, as a Girl Scout Leader, and as a Newcomers Club officer and style show planner. In 1962, Mr. and Mrs. Aikman moved their family to Columbus where Freda worked as a bookkeeper for Arvin Industries, then Hamilton Cosco, and finally at Hamilton Associates specializing in personal investment recordkeeping for the Hamilton brothers. In retirement, Mrs. Aikman worked for the Columbus Inn, cared for her grandson Aaron, and volunteered for the national Judicial Family Institute. Her hobbies included interior decorating, bridge, sewing, reading, crossword puzzles and watching her grandsons play basketball. She was also a great cook and loved family gatherings. Freda Aikman was the widow of John Charles Aikman, Sr. (1916-1986). Survivors include a daughter, Jan Ellen Aikman Dickson and her husband Brent, Indianapolis; son John Charles Aikman II and his wife Marti, Bloomington; son Scott Arnold Aikman and his wife Ruth, Champaign, Ill.; and daughter Anne Elizabeth Aikman-Scalese and her husband Christopher, Tucson, Ariz., where Freda spent her last few years.
