Lewis H. Smith, 79, of Charleston Place died at 3:10 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
Mr. Smith retired from Cummins Engine Co., Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. and Bartholomew County Public Library. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Crossroads Community Church, a member and past vice commander of American Legion Post #24, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (V.F.W.) and Fraternal Order of Police (F.O.P.).
Arrangements were made by Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
Born in Johnson City, Tenn., June 26, 1926, Mr. Smith was the son of William and Roxie Love Smith. He married Virginia M. Goins who passed away Dec. 4, 2001.
Survivors include brothers, Robert and Allen (Elaine) Smith, both of Columbus; sisters, Lavellma Owens of Johnson City, Tennessee, Nancy Humes of Madison and Dewatha (James) McAllister of Charlotte, N.C.; sisters-in-law, Oneita Smith and Barbara Jo King, both of Columbus; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Irene Smith Humes and Frances Ann Smith; brothers, Marion D. Smith, Shirley L. Smith and Clarence H. King; and his stepmother, Prentess Smith.
Funeral Information
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday at Garland Brook Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
