Jerald D. Penner

Jerald D. Penner, 77, of Columbus, passed away at 5:30 a.m. December 6, 2018, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Jerald was born January 6, 1941, in Fairview, Oklahoma, the son of Henry A. and Mary Wichert Penner. He married Sherry Bruce October 26, 1963. Jerald graduated from college in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for eleven years and the Air Force Reserves for two. Jerald then was employed at Cummins Engine Co. for 35 years until his retirement. After retiring, Jerald went to work for his wife at The Mail Box and Mailing Supplies for four years before they sold it in 2006. He was a member of Garden City Church of Christ where he had been a deacon. Jerald enjoyed boating and camping when his children were younger, as well as bowling and yard work throughout his life. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. The funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Garden City Church of Christ with Pastor Brian Gilroy officiating. Calling will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Survivors include his wife, Sherry; son, Bryan (Amy) Penner of Raleigh, North Carolina, and a daughter, Shelia (Dan Arbuckle) Barrix of Columbus; a brother, Charles (Percilla) Penner of Joplin, Missouri; and grandchildren, Kelsey and Cameron Barrix, and Braden and Bryce Penner. He was preceded in death by his parents. Arrangements provided by the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
