Gerald E. “Smitty” Smith, age 89, of Franklin Street, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Monday August 20, 2018 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility.  Gerald was born August 10, 1929 in Kokomo, Indiana to the late Charles and Hazel (Hostetler) Smith and has lived in Columbus for most of his life. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from Saps Bakery after over 40 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 1152 in Kokomo, Indiana. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday August 23, 2018 in Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors provided by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from Noon until 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home. Gerald is survived by sons, Jeffrey A. (Donna) Smith of Edinburgh, Paul (Sheila) Smith of Columbus; a step son, Mike Moffett of Columbus; a daughter, Pamela (Tom) Lanham of Columbus and step daughters, Barbara Bragg and Sue Wetzel both of Columbus. He is also survived by several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, JoAnn Marlow Smith, Willodean Noles Smith and Tillie Talkington Smith and a son Daniel Smith.

  1. Saw Smittys obit in Edinburgh paper. So sorry for your loss. Worked at Sap’s and got to know Smiity, Willodean and Barbara. Smitty was always such a happy person who always joked around and made you laugh a lot. A good person!!!
