He married Donna Joan Applas on April 20, 1974.Richard was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He graduated from Hauser High School, Ivy Tech, and was employed by Cummins Engine Company as an electronic technician. Richard was previously employed by Allison Engine Company in the Gas Turbine Division, as well as Arvin Industries.Richard had served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, was a member of the National Muzzle Loading Association and enjoyed being a Boy Scouts Troop Leader, sky diving and playing golf.The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4850 W. Goeller Road, Columbus, with Bishop Jesse Shoaf officiating. Military rites will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Jewell–Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Hartsville College Cemetery.Memorials may be made to the Our Hospice of South Central Indiana through the funeral home.Survivors include his wife, Donna; son, Shawn C. (Kyle) Purvis, of Columbus; daughter, Heather (John) Anderson of New Pekin, Indiana; grandchildren, Logan D. Petro, Dawson R. Petro, Molly E. Purvis, Johnathen L. Anderson, Mackenszie J. Purvis, Shelby Anderson and Kaylee Anderson; and a brother, Robert L. (Nancy) Purvis of Columbus.He was preceded in death by his parents.
