Charlie Smith, 77, of Columbus, died at 3:55 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2016, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Charlie was born August 18, 1938, in Wentz, Kentucky, the son of Bob and Bertha Shepherd Smith. He married Serena E. Day March 6, 1962. Charlie had been employed at Stewart-Warner in Indianapolis for many years and Reliance Electric in Columbus. He was a member of Elizabethtown Christian Church. Charlie proudly served his country in the Marine Corps. He loved woodworking, gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Shane. Survivors include his wife, Serena; daughter, Kimberly (Kenny) Lakins of Scipio; one grandchild, Shane Lakins of Scipio; brothers and sisters-in-law, R.D. (Karen) Day of Portsmouth, Virginia, Pryor (Maria) Day of Holland, Texas, Wayne (Charlett) McDougal of Whitesburg, Kentucky, Jean Day of Columbus and Jeri Day Wright of Columbus; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Smith and James Smith; and a sister, Drucilla Smith.

  2. Rena, Kim, Shane and Kenny: There isn’t anything I could say in words to express my deep sorrow of Charlie leaving this family. He fought the “good fight” against this horrible disease, in true Marine Corps fashion.As a family we are blessed and honored to have had Charlie as a member. It is our challenge to carry on his high standards. May you be consoled by knowing he is at rest in a better place. Until I see all of you again I bid you love, peace and happy memories of Charlie May he rest in peace and may all of the company of Heaven rejoice because Charlie is there .   3. Rena, Kim, Kenny, and Shane. Our hearts are broken, but we know Uncle Charlie is not suffering any longer. We love him dearly and he will be missed. I know Kevin will miss going to see him and talking for hours. We love you all. Pam, Kevin, Annie and Rylie.
