SERVICES: Family and friends may meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home to drive in procession to the Hawcreek Baptist Cemetery for a 10:00 a.m. graveside service. Johnnie Cheek, 72, of Berkdale Drive, died at 7:00 a.m.Saturday, July 25, 2015, at his home. Johnnie was born March 17, 1943 in Columbus, the son of Jack and Lucy Mae Ballard Cheek. He married Alta Earline Coomer June 10, 1967. Johnnie served his country in the United States Army from 1964-1966, spending 20 months in Germany. He retired from Reliance Electric in 2009. Johnnie was an avid fisherman, enjoyed metal detecting and discussing history. Out of his many talents, he was most proud of being an accomplished banjo player who enjoyed "picking" the banjo for his family and friends. Johnnie was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include his wife, Earline; sons, Troy Lee (Marcia) Cheek, Tad Cheek and Travis (Kim) Cheek, all of Columbus; daughter, Shannon (Brad) Bower of Columbus; sisters, Judy (Ronnie) Branum and Linda Coulter, both of Columbus; and grandchildren, Nick and Caleb Bower and Alexis and Makenzie Cheek. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Cheek; mother, Lucy Mae Ballard Sparks; brothers, Bill and Sam Cheek; and a sister, Betty Jones.
