SERVICES: Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. September 7, 2013 at Garland Brook Cemetery with Bishop Gunars Lazdins officiating. MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Sig Ozols to: Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church of Indianapolis, C/O Andrejs Kancs, 502 Walbridge Street, Carmel, IN 46032. Sigurd Herman Ozols was born in Latvia on June 26, 1920, and died on August 31, 2013 at the age of 93. He lived a full and independent life in Delray Beach, Florida and died of natural causes at his residence with family at his side. Sig came to America in 1949 as a political refugee with his wife, Vanda, and two young daughters, Lia and Irida. Sig and his family became American citizens in 1953. Sig also helped more than a dozen members of his extended family survive the war and immigrate to the United States. Sig was educated as a chemist. He was sponsored as a farmhand in Green Castle, Indiana, but soon left to establish a laboratory at Welko Feed Company in Spencer, Iowa in 1954, the Ozols moved to Indianapolis where Sig fulfilled his "American Dream" to be an entrepreneur, builder, and contractor. In America, three sons were born: Glen, Charles, and Sigurd. Sig relocated his family to Columbus in 1964. He was very successful developing subdivisions, homes, churches, and commercial buildings. He built the Williamsburg Apartments in the 1960's to be spacious and affordable. Sig was a lifelong sports enthusiast. At 16, Sig attended the 1936 Olympic Games on the Latvian basketball team. He loved the competitive sports and played tennis into his eighties. He became a Mason and a Rotarian and spoke about his experiences living in Europe under Hitler and Stalin. He was a proud conservative and champion of democracy. He is survived by his sister, Erika; his children, Lia, Irida, Glen, Chuck, and Sigurd "Butch"; seven grandchildren, Kelli, Hudson, Alec, Rebecca, Rachel, Sigurd, and Raymond; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jake, and Jenna. Sig was predeceased by his wife, Vanda; sister, Irene; and parents, Emma and Peter. Tp theFamily of Sig i am so very sorry for your loss. We met Sig in Pines of Delray west many years ago and became very good friends. Sig loved to entertain his Canadian friends as he so lovingly called us. He was terrific at barbecueing and setting a beautiful dinner table. Sig loved life. He was a true gentleman. spoke beautiully with a very gentle voice. I will miss talking to him. Rest in Peace Sig
