James L. Shafer, 52, of Reed Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at his home. James was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and attended Apostolic Bible Church. He loved his family very much and enjoyed gardening, cooking, pulling jokes and aggravating others. Born in Columbus Sept. 2, 1959, Mr. Shafer was the son of James L. and Tina Purvis Shafer. He is survived by sisters, Kathy (Darrell) Scrogham of Columbus, IN, and Tina I. (Duane Pettigrew) Shafer of Columbus, IN; half sisters, Cathy Carman of Columbus, IN, and Debbie Shafer of Columbus, IN; brothers, Jess (Donna) Hall of California and John (Dorothy) Shafer of Columbus, IN; nieces and nephews, Chastity, Ginny, Desto, Lyndsey, Tony, Darrell, Andy, Bryan, J.D. and Timmy; and his dog, Breaker. He was preceded in death by his parents. FUNERAL: 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Kelly officiating and military rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard. CALLING:1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and one hour prior to the service Tuesday. BURIAL: Lambert Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the James L. Shafer Memorial Fund.
