Douglas E. Burriss, 45, of Columbus, formerly of Del Ray Beach, Florida, passed away at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, September 11, 2011, in Columbus. Born December 3, 1965, in Bartholomew County, he was the son of William I. and Dorothy S. Burriss. After graduating from Columbus East High School, Mr. Burriss worked many years at Milestone Construction before moving to Florida to refurbish watercraft and enjoy the Florida coast. He loved to be outdoors and was an avid collector of American Indian artifacts. Mr. Burriss is survived by his sons, Eric D. (Alisha) Burriss of Ft. Campbell, KY, and Dustin A. (Sarah) Burriss of Ogilville, IN; a daughter, Amanda Burriss of Indianapolis, IN; brothers, Gary E. (Martha) Burriss and Greg K. Burriss, and a sister, Jan K. Burriss, all of Columbus, IN; several grandchildren, nieces and a nephew, as well as his longtime companion, Kimberly Knoepp of Florida. Mr. Burriss was preceded in death by his parents. Though he was taken too soon from his family, he will always be remembered for his infectious smile and laughing eyes, as they are now reflected in the faces of his children. SERVICES: Following his wishes, Mr. Burriss will be cremated. Private services will be conducted at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bartholomew County Humane Society.

i spoke with doug on the phone for about an hour a week before he passed. we had a great talk but i never thought it would be our last. god bless the survivors.

I have no words to express the sadness of loosing one of the greatest people that I had a chance to get close to. Doug was remarkable in so many ways, and will be missed by many in Florida.
