Phyllis Jean Davis Murley September 19, 1923 - March 19, 2011 Phyllis Murley was born on September 19, 1923, in Columbus, Indiana to Lloyd H. and Jeannette Parker Davis. She passed away on March 19, 2011, in Seneca, South Carolina. She graduated from Columbus High School in 1940. Following her graduation, she was employed by Rural Electric Membership Corp., which brought electricity to rural Bartholomew County. She later was employed by Union Starch and Refining Co. for 16 years. She eventually retired in 1988 as an accountant for SIECO, Inc. She was married to Lionel A. Murley in June 1942 and they were the first couple to be married in the Chapel of the First Christian Church in Columbus. Lionel passed away in June of 1984. Mrs. Murley leaves behind two daughters, Beverly (Mrs. William) Steinhagen of Doylestown, PA, and Dr. Elizabeth (Mrs. John) Prescott of Seneca, SC. She also leaves a sister, Ruth Stout, of Columbus, IN, and three grandchildren, Amy (Mrs. Andrew) Linn, of Maple Glen, PA, Robert Steinhagen of Glenside, PA, and Capt. Andrew Prescott (US Army) of Colorado Springs, CO. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Andrew Peter Linn of Maple Glen, PA. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and held several different offices including treasurer and financial secretary of the church. She also taught adult Sunday School and was a member of the Circle. She belonged to the ONO Homemakers Club for 61 years, and to the Bartholomew County Historical Society and the Senior Center of Columbus. She enjoyed reading, painting, crossword puzzles, gardening and traveling. Funeral Information Services are planned for Friday, April 8, 2011 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home in Columbus, IN at 11:00 a.m. Calling will be from 9:30-11:00 on the same day. Interment will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Donations Information In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
