Rev. Bert J Reed July 06, 1923 - October 21, 2010 The Rev. Bert J. Reed. 87, of Lafayette Avenue, died at 12:26 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010 at Covered Bridge Health Campus in Seymour. Rev. Reed was a former Indiana State Policeman and was also Safety Education Director for many years before entering the ministry. He was an ordained United Methodist Church minister and served in several capacities in the Southern District. He was a parish pastor and evangelist for many years. He joined the National Guard and served as Chaplain before retiring as a Full Bird Colonel. He was a member of St. Johns Masonic Lodge, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, the Murat Shrine and the Eastern Star. He was a 33 Degree Mason and had been voted into Whos Who in America. Rev. Reed was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and had also served as a Bartholomew County Special Deputy. Bert received his Bachelors and Masters degree from Indiana University. Bert was born July 6, 1923 in Ripley County, the son Laura Oliger Reed and Bert Reed Jr. He married Helen G. Crippen May 2, 1948. She survives. Survivors include a daughter, Cathy J. (David) Reed Squires of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Jane Reed of Columbus; grandchildren, Angela Hogan of Demorest, GA, Bryan Reed of Columbus, Matthew Reed Gable of Atlanta, GA, Lori Reed Mills of Freetown, and Katie Elizabeth Moore of Cornelia, GA; and great-grandchildren, Dylan Anderson, Holly Hogan, Bryce Tanner, Cassidy Gable and Jenaya Tanner. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Ross M. Reed and a sister, Jean Stancombe. Funeral Information FUNERAL: 10 a.m. Monday, October 25, at Sandy Hook United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Russell officiating. CALLING: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9 a.m. until service time Monday. BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery with graveside rites performed by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
