Sharon Elaine Blackerby October 03, 1959 - June 18, 2009 Sharon Elaine Blackerby, 49, of Franklin Street died at 6:31 a.m., Thursday June 18, 2009 at Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis. Sharon was born October 3, 1959 in Scottsburg, IN, the daughter of Eugene and June Helmerich. She graduated from Indiana University Bloomington where she studied Sociology and English. She married her high school sweetheart, Wayne, September 25, 1982. Together they had two beautiful sons, Corbin Foster, deceased, and Caleb Fitzgerald, 18. Sharon devoted her life to nurturing the musical and intellectual talents of her boys. Sharons passion for learning and the written word inspired not only her sons academic achievements but eventually her own book, Cutting the Cord. She championed, produced, and otherwise encouraged dozens of shows during her many years of involvement with the Mill Race Players. Her love of music and performing were so great as to inspire both her sons to study performing arts at the collegiate level. She was at her happiest watching Corbin and Caleb shine on stage. Sharon and her husband Wayne opened and managed their first restaurant, Broad Acres in North Vernon, IN. Later, she proudly supported her family as they opened Blackerbys Hanger 5 at Columbus Municipal Airport. She was the creative force behind many of the Hangers most popular specials and baked goods, including the famous, Mrs. Bs Big Cookies. Survivors include her husband, Elby Wayne Blackerby of Columbus; a son, Caleb Fitzgerald of Columbus; her mother, Wanda June Helmerich; her sister and brother in law, Sandra and Kurt Hunt of North Vernon; brother and sister in laws, Jerry and Jackie Blackerby of Seymour, Sue and Marvin Reynolds of Butlerville and Larry and Cheryl Blackerby of Bloomington, and Chic and Rick Mize; nephews, Samuel and Bradley Hunt, both of North Vernon. Sharon was preceded in death by her father, Eugene Foster Helmerich; and her son Corbin Foster Blackerby. Funeral Information MEMORIAL SERVICE: The memorial service for Sharon will be at 7:00 p.m., Monday, June 22, 2009 at Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home. VISITATION: Gathering will be from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., Monday June 22, 2009 at Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home.
