Guillermo "Bill" Conejo February 10, 1914 - July 17, 2008 Guillermo Uncle Bill Conejo, 94 of Hawcreek Avenue died in the arms of his loving wife singing the nation anthems of both Cuba and the United States and surrounded by his family at 7:25 a.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Hospice of South Central Indiana in Columbus. Guillermo, like his father before him, worked for the Cuban Government for 47 years as Accessor General of Junior Baseball, and later as General Commissioner of Junior Baseball. During his tenure he was, in part, responsible for the creation and development of the Pan American Games where he represented Cuba at the Mexico City and Dominican Republic games. He also served simultaneously in various other baseball management positions, including Baseball Commissioner of Cuba. He wrote for the Cuban newspaper EL MUNDO and the Spanish publication of the SPAULDING MAGAZINE, focusing on baseball. Guillermo was a graduate of the University of Havana with a Masters degree in Business Administration. He and his family were the first Cubans sponsored by St. Pauls Episcopal Church to arrive in Columbus after the communist take over of the island nation in 1959. Mr. Conejo worked at Cummins Engine Company in the Tech Center for 13 years, retiring in 1979. Born February 10, 1914 in Havana, Cuba, Guillermo was the son of Antonio Conejo and Benita Artimba. He married Alice Achong June 28, 1947 in Havana, Cuba. The couple recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Survivors include his loving wife, Alice; his son, Antonio (Kevin); nephews, Antonio Conejo and Dr. Joaquin Bertmatti-Conejo, both of Florida. Funeral Information VISITATION: Sunday, July 20, 2008 from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the Jewell - Rittman Family Funeral Home. FUNERAL: Monday, July 21, 2008 at noon at St. Paul Episcopal Church with Father Mark Vance officiating.
