Charles D. Akers August 04, 2006 Charles D. Akers, 82, of Monticello Drive, Columbus, Ind., died at 4:45 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2006 at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Charles lived in Ripley County before moving to Columbus in 1997. He retired in 1986 from Jefferson Proving Ground as Proof Director. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a life member of the Versailles American Legion #173. He was a Past Master and 60year member of the Versailles Masonic Lodge #7 and was also a member of the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite for 45 years and Order of the Eastern Star #333 in Versailles. He was a member of the Columbus High Twelve Club #337 and the Bartholomew County Senior Center. He was a member of Versailles Baptist Church in Versailles and attended First Baptist Church of Columbus. Mr. Akers was born October 20, 1923 in Versailles, Ind., the son of Howard L. and Catherine Licking Akers. He married Shirley J. Brown on December 11, 1948. Survivors include his wife; a son, David L. (Karen) Akers of Columbus, Ind.; a daughter, Donna Sue (Ed) Schneider of Columbus, Ind.; grandchildren, Matthew L. (Natasha) Akers of Pensacola, Fla.; Rebecca (Daron) Brown of Columbus, Ind.; and Mark Schneider and Julie Schneider, both of Columbus, Ind.; and greatgrandchildren, Nicole Akers and Lindsay Akers. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lindsay, Cecil, Elvan and Robert Akers; and sisters, Valete Eads, Hibernia Baker and Cathryn Akers Funeral Information FUNERAL: Will be Monday, August 7, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at Versailles Baptist Church in Versailles, Ind., with the Rev. Jon Carlstrom officiating. CALLING: Will be today from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at JewellRittman Family Funeral Home and Monday, August 7, 2006 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services at the church. A Masonic Memorial Service will take place at 7:00 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles. Donations Information Memorials may be made to Cliff Hill Cemetery in Versailles or to Hospice of South Central Indiana
