Robert Avery "Hawk" Garland

Robert Avery “Hawk” Garland, 74, of Flat Rock, passed away June 14, 2019 at 1:38 p.m., at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana. Robert was born on Dec 14, 1944 in Spray Town, the son of Clay and Ione Garland. He married Brenda Mercer. He loved his work at Cummins Tech Center until he retired. His favorite pastime was his Goldwing Motorcycle and the many trips he had taken. His grandkids were his life as well. A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with grandson, Zebediah Gibson officiating. Calling will be from 12:00 until 2:00 before service time Sunday at the funeral home. In keeping with his wishes, Robert will be cremated. Survivors include, his wife, Brenda Mercer; Children, Joseph Garland, Stephanie Garland, Lisa Newby, Mike Newby, Bill Newby and Jamie Newby. 14 grandkids, 14 great-grandkids, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Shelly Garland; and a sister Virginia.

I am proud to say that Robert was my brother. He was a good man and a kind man and a whole lot of fun to drink Wild Turkey with. I’m sorry my journey took me so far away. RIP brother.

Bob was a wonderful man that loved his family. I also remember how much he loved riding his motorcycle. Rest in Heaven. Condolences to his family.
It has been said that, ” If you want to test a frienship, go on vacation with them and then see if you would do it again.” Went a couple of places by motorcycle that were out of state. We were tent campers usually. We were younger, single, tougher and poorer then. It was late 1970s.We rode motorcycles many times to just Colorado and to Wyoming.We would encountered many great plains storms as we crossed the country on US50, I70, US40, US36, US24, US20, I80 I90, I94, Canada1, Canada16.We would take 1 cigar to smoke before returning. It was just a photo prop later.We ate in a lot of om and pop restaurants. they were the best stops. Some other roads that we traveled were:Highlands Senic Parkway WV, Linn Cove Viaduct, Tail of the Dragon, Mena-Talihina Parkway, Natchez Ttrace Parkway, Beartooth Highway MO, Needles Highway SD, Going to the Sun Rd MO, The Million Dollar Highway 550 CO, Wolf Creek Pass. Some of the neat places that we stopped were: Helen GA, Jackson Hole WY, Memphis TN, Mackinaw Bridge MI, Medicine Rock WY, Lambert’s Cafe MO, Durango CO, Mt St Helens OR, Winchester Museum & Old Trail Town in Cody WY, Fort Robinson NE, Mt Evans CO, Estes Park CO, Medicine Bow WY, Wilson Lake KS, Valentine NE, Crazy Horse Monunent, Red River Gorge KY. We visited more parks than I can remember:Blue Ridge Parkway Nat Pk, Shenandoah National Park, Great Smokey Mtns Nat Pk, Yellowstone Nat Pk, Rocky Mtns Nat Pk, Glacier Nat Pk, Grand Canyon Nat Pk, Zion Nat Pk, Arches National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park Cedar Breaks Nat Pk, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, Yellowstone Nat Pk, Gateway Arch National Park MO, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument MO, Scotts Bluff National Monument NE, Badlands National Park SD, Mount Rushmore National Memorial SD, Land between the Lakes KY, Jasper and Banff National Park Canada, Devils Tower National Monument WY, New River Gorge National River WV.We had a really good time on the bikes and I hope we can do it again.

My Dad is forever in our hearts, and we Love him very much. I would like to honor my Mother, Linda Lee Campton, as she was unmentioned. She was his first wife and the Mother of all of his children. We love you Daddy, you will greatly missed.
