John L. Bornhorst, 81, of Columbus passed away at 8:10 p.m. on April 13, 2020 at Four Seasons Retirement Center. He was born on September 22, 1938 in Shelbyville, Indiana the son of Lawrence A. and Mary Frances H. Bornhorst. He married Nancy Wills of Terre Haute on August 15, 1971. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Shelbyville and attended St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church in Columbus. He was a graduate of Shelbyville High School and proudly served in the United States Army for three years with most of his time in Germany. John kept watch on horse racing. He was a big Colts fan and dearly loved the Pacers. And he was devoted to his pet cats Sundance and Merry Sue (Blackie). Survivors include his wife Nancy of 49 years, nieces Suzy (Mike) Davis, Amy (Dean) Dammann, Diane (Brian) Bowman and nephew Brad who all reside in California. A sister-in-law Rozann Bornhorst Watkins (Bill) also survives in California along with several great nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents, his grandmother Hattie Hendrickson, and a brother Tom. Private visitation by friends is planned at Jewell – Rittman Family Funeral Home followed by a private graveside service at Garland Brook Cemetery with Father Chris Wadelton officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Bartholomew Friends of Haiti thru the funeral home.

  1. Nancy, I will always remember John as a very humble man. I didn’t know him well but always remember him coming into Mass and sitting in the back pew. He frequently attended the school mass on Thursdays. Obviously, his religion was very important to him. So sorry for your loss. Bob and Barb Pruitt
