September 9, 1931 ~ July 24, 2020

Clarence Albert “Shorty” Fiesbeck Jr. of Columbus, Indiana passed away at 1:35 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Clarence was born on September 9, 1931 in Columbus, Indiana, the son of Clarence and Blanche Sparks Fiesbeck. Clarence married Jean Sims on June 10, 1951, she survives. Clarence has always lived on the family farm. When he was younger and short, his twin brothers grabbed his arms when they were running to catch the bus and said, “come on shorty”. That name has stuck all through the years although he grew to be 6’2”. He was a kind and caring man, helping anyone he could. He even took in a home-less man giving him a place to stay, a car and a job. Shorty was a farmer all his life but any extra time was spent as an Oliver tractor mechanic and selling PAG seed corn. He was on the Bartholomew County Fair Board and also on the REMC Board of Directors. Shorty enjoyed coon hunting, fishing, taking care of his fruit trees and honey beekeeping. Survivors include his wife; children, Jan (Robert) Shireman, Pam Jordan both Decatur County and Jay (Jordea) Fiesbeck of Columbus; grandchildren, Amy (Scott) Best, Tammy, Craig and Kyle (Sara) Shireman of Decatur County, Chris (Erica) Jordan of Hope, Indiana and Matt (Janette) Jordan of Columbus; great grandchildren, Breanna (Kyle) Conwell, Taylor and Kiley Best, Alivia and Kole Jordan, Garrett Hamilton, Evan, Elaina, Lyndsey and Carter Shireman; a great great grandchild, Emi Conwell. He is also survived by one sister, Etta Faye (Guy) Hudson. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Don, Dean and Bill and a sister, Margaret Fiesbeck. Due to the Covid 19 Virus, a private family service will be held on the family farm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Petersville United Methodist Church or Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I’m thankful for all the visits and stop bys that Shorty made to my mom and dad’s on Marr Rd. with corn, I think tomatoes and honey. He would always take time to sit and visit with them a while too. Those were the days. I know Helen and Bob appreciated it. I told mom of Shorty’s passing and pretty sure she realized who I was talking about. At 102 her mind is really sketchy at times. Just wanted to let our cousins Jean, Jan, Pam and Jay, know that you have our sympathy and will be thinking of you during this difficult time. If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Mary Ellen and Bill McClelland and Helen Milnes.

    • Jean, Jay, Jan, Pam and families…..Please accept our deepest sympathy at the passing of your loved one. Shorty was such a fine man, respected and loved by many. Don has fond memories of their fishing trip and we will always think of him when we recall the Fish Fries at Petersville UMC. May God give you peace, and may your precious memories give you comfort.

    • Jean and Family, so sorry to hear of Shorty’s passing. Special memories through out the years. Shorty and you where always so nice and caring. His smile and laugh will be missed. May God give you and your family comfort during these rough times.

  2. Jean Fiesbeck and family, Boy do I have lots of wonderful memories of Shorty ! Working at Silgsas for all those years I really got to know and work with him quite often . He was such a cool guy. I absolutely loved his laugh ! So sad to here he has passed . Love and prayers to all of you. Sincerely, Greg Fiesbeck.

  3. Jean I am so sorry to hear this. I am praying for you. I miss seeing you guys every morning , one of the reasons for getting up and coming to work at Kramers everyday. I hope Walter and Dean saved him a seat so they can wait on the rest of us. love and blessings.

  4. Jean, Jan, Pam and Jay, I was so sorry to hear of Shorty’s passing. I don’t remember ever seeing him with out a smile. As a little girl, Jan and I spent the night with each other and I was never afraid of your dad. He was bigger than my dad and for that reason alone I could have been a little nervous, that could be all it would take. Your dad was – to this little girl – very kind man. I’m glad I knew him. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

    • Jean, and all the family.. so sorry to read this. He must have been a grateful and generous man. He was well respected by many. I only remember seeing him in the kitchen when I stayed all night one time, but he was nice then. Jan, I remember some fun Petersville times. You will all miss him greatly.

  5. Jean, Jan, Pam and Jay,

We all will truly miss Shorty – his laugh was truly contagious!

As for fond memories, we remember Christmas at Grandma and Grandpa Ott’s, fishing escapades in Wisconsin and on the Driftwood River, many fish fries with the master frier (Ott’s barn, family reunions, church affairs and many others), the “cabin” weeks spent along the banks of the Driftwood in Grandpa Ott’s cabin, as well as his interests in beekeeping and fruits raised.

His family always came first and we all will miss him.

    We will visit soon…

    Dennis and Claudia Shafer
