Lawrence E “Larry” Kitterman, age 86, passed away peacefully from this life on Friday, September 3, 2021 at his home, with Jeanne, Tom, and Deb by his side. Larry was born at home on December 14, 1934 to Basil and Doris Harshman Kitterman at Kirkpatrick, Indiana. He attended school at Earl Park, Indiana graduating in 1952. He then attended Purdue University. On October 14, 1956 he married Betty Ruth Wolfe at Fowler, Indiana. She proceeded him in death on March 23, 1999. They were the parents of Steven, Thomas, Gail and Laura. Laura passed shortly after birth in February 1972. Larry served in the US Army from 1957 to 1959 and was stationed at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver, Colorado and Mannheim, Germany. In March 1962 he was employed by Cummins Employee Federal Credit Union, now Centra Credit Union, serving in several positions. He retired in May 2017 after 55 years of service. Larry received a Proclamation from Mayor James D. Leinhoop declaring April 4, 2017 as Larry Kitterman Day. On September 21, 2002 he married Carol Jean “Jeanne” Turrel in Columbus, Indiana and she survives. Jeanne has four children, Judi (Mike) Kidd, Todd (Margie) Turrel, Lynda Richards, and Deb Turrel. Larry served as an assistant scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 105 at Petersville for several years. He was an avid softball player and played “40 and over“ slow pitch with several teams from Columbus, Shelbyville, and Indianapolis for over 35 years. He especially enjoyed “spring training” in March and many years playing up to 20 games a week in Florida. In retirement, he played senior volleyball. Larry was an active volunteer in the community. He served as treasurer, at Eastside Community Center for many years. He volunteered at Love Chapel, Salvation Army, Reality Stores at the middle schools, Helping Hands suppers, and served Thanksgiving meals at First Christian Church of Columbus. Larry attended first Christian Church of Columbus, where he was involved with sidewalk Sunday school, attended the men’s breakfast Bible study group, was an active member of the Tuesday morning Bible study and Wednesday evening small group Bible study. Larry loved his 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He enjoyed playing ball with them, helping them with their studies, attending their school programs/activities, and sporting events. Larry and his wife, Jeanne, enjoyed trips to visit family and friends traveling to Michigan, California, Arizona, Colorado, Ohio, Texas, Tennessee, Montana, and throughout Indiana. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, September 10, 2021 at First Christian Church, 531 5th St. Columbus, IN 47201 with Tyler Tolbert officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Calling will be from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be held at Fairlawn Cemetery in Kentland, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, In Touch Ministries, and Samaritans Purse, through the funeral home. Survivors include his children, sons Steven (Jeannie) Kitterman of Vail, Arizona, Thomas (Nancy) Kitterman of Columbus, IN and daughter Gail (Thomas) Spivey of Scottsdale, AZ; stepchildren, Deborah Turrel of Columbus, IN, Judith (Michael) Kidd of Fishers, IN, Lynda Richards of Greenville, SC and Todd (Margie) Turrel of Petaluma, CA; Sister, Louise McGraw of Hamilton, GA, and brother William (Christine) Kitterman of Romney, IN. Grandchildren include Laura & Cole Kitterman, Abbey, Elise & Sam Spivey, Lance Kitterman, Kari (Garrett) Thompson, Kory (Lindsay) Noland, Karley Anne Richards, Timothy Turrel, Andrew (Kristen) Kidd, John Kidd. Great-grandchildren include Klair, Alaina, Koen, & Eyzleigh Thompson, Waylen Noland, Alana & Griffin Kidd.

  1. I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories of attending Senior Saints in the Smokies with Larry & Jeanne.

  2. Always loved seeing Larry and Jeanne serving at Sidewalk Sunday School. They always had huge smiles as they worked with the kids and for me every time I saw them at church. You will all be in my prayers as you celebrate a life well lived.

  5. Jeanne, my heart goes out to you and your family. I pray God gives you peace during this time. Larry was a sweet man with a kind heart. He always passed out big peppermint sticks during the holidays to everyone in the building. Maybe I’ll do that in his honor this year.
