Marvin O. “Sonny” Gates, age 77, passed from this life at 11:30 p.m. on Monday, November 1st, 2021 at home surrounded by his family. Sonny was born on August 18th, 1944 in Bloomington Indiana, son of Dorothy (Funkhouser) and Glenn M. Gates. The family moved to Columbus where Sonny attended the Columbus schools, graduating from Columbus High School. He was active in sports and loved playing baseball. He is a Vietnam Veteran, and served his country in the US Navy on the USS Shangri La from 1963 to 1969. Sonny played in the local softball league, was an avid bowler on the 2 G’s Gang team with his father Glenn and sons Ronald M. and Carey J. Gates. He is a long-standing member of Winding Waters Bass Masters fishing club, holding multiple club officer positions over the years and is the current club President. He was the Tournament Director for the Hospice of South-Central Indiana Fishing Tournament and was an annual Hospice Concert volunteer. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 2021 with Father Clem Davis officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 5, and on Saturday from 1:00 until service time. Military rights will be performed by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Scottish bagpipes will be played by Mike Kutsko. Sonny is survived by his wife, Mary (Traynor) Gates, sons, Alan (Theresa) Quick of Hopkinsville, KY and Carey J. Gates of Edinburgh, IN, daughters Shannon Warner of Phoenix, AZ and Marci (Nathan) Petri of Columbus, IN, grandchildren Eric (Valerie) Quick, Thomas (Alex) Coakley, Cassandra Scott, Amber (Jason) Wimmenauer, Christopher (Erin) Collins, Crystal (Jonathan) White, Joshua (Kristy) Satterfield, Darien (Leah) Morin, Heather Morin, Danelle Gates, Zachary Gates, Dakota (McCaela) Gates, Sierra Gates, Marvin (Brianna) Gates, Alaysia (Jacob) Bostic, Cheyton Wise and Jaida Wise and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn M. and Dorothy F. Gates, daughter, Melinda Dawn Gates, son, Ronald M. Gates, great-granddaughter, Hope Leann Adams, and grandson, Travis Satterfield.
