Barbara Anne Frederick
June 19, 1924 ~ July 30, 2022
Barbara Anne Frederick, 98, passed away in Columbus, Indiana on July 30, 2022.
Barbara was known as "Bobbie Burns" as she grew up in Scranton, Pennsylvania in an Irish household with her three older brothers. She was born on June 19, 1924, to Patrick and Mary Burns.
In Scranton, Barbara nurtured her love of learning, attending the University of Scranton after training in secretarial skills. She also was passionate about snow skiing in the Pocono and Berkshire Mountains, keeping stats for University of Scranton sports, and trips to the Scranton Zoo.
In 1956, Barbara married Jim Frederick in Detroit, Michigan where she was working as an executive secretary for Ford Motor Company. She and Jim raised eight children in Columbus, Indiana. Barbara passed on to her children her passion for learning (she earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1979), her servant's heart, and especially her love for family. Nothing brought her more joy than sharing time with family. Her grandchildren were a special treasure to her.
Barbara cherished her faith and lived this out through her involvement in ministries at St. Bartholomew and by reaching out to those in need. She initiated the "Neighbor's Workshop" after identifying needs through the welfare department in Bartholomew County. Friends and neighbors came together to create handmade crafts to be sold to raise money for those in crisis. She also was the Columbus Chairperson for Ecumenical FISH Ministry serving vulnerable individuals through a variety of services, and she assisted with the Child Care Clinic, another ministry of the Ecumenical Society of Bartholomew County. In 1972, Barbara received the "Service to Mankind Award", given by the Columbus Sertoma Club to recognize her work in the Columbus area. She also was able to address her interest in international affairs through her involvement in the American Center for International Leadership which was based in Columbus in the 1980s.
Barbara is survived by one daughter, Sr. Anne Frederick OSB; seven sons and their spouses, Mark (Beth) Frederick, Tom (Lani) Frederick, Neil Frederick, David (Beth) Frederick, Shawn (Lora Lyn) Frederick, Matthew (Mary Ann) Frederick, and Jay (Shawn) Frederick; 13 grandchildren, Richard Croddy, Luke Frederick, Amy Haag, Meriel Nobel, Sean, Meghan, Noelle, Alex, Michaela, Lauren, Evan, and Emelia Frederick, Solomon Gearheart; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Frederick; three brothers, Paul, Jack, and Francis Burns; and her grandson, Scott Frederick.
Visitation is from 4 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Rosary following at 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 4, 2022, at 10:30 AM at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church with Father Chris Wadelton officiating. The burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Indianapolis following the funeral.
Memorial contributions can be made to Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, Catholic Relief Services, or to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
The family would like to thank all the Four Seasons staff who gave loving and professional care to Barbara.
