Viola Kay Mitchell, 75, of Columbus, passed away on September 30, 2023, with her daughter by her side in Indianapolis. “Kay” as she was known, was born on June 5, 1948, in Edinburgh to Owen and Rachel (Gaddis) Whitlock. She was a nursing assistant at several healthcare facilities including Willow Crossing and Cottonwood Senior Living. She was united in marriage to her husband Michael on May 18, 1990. Kay was of the Apostolic Pentecostal faith and was a follower and believer in her Savior, Jesus Christ. She loved singing gospel music, helping with Sunday School, watching birds and squirrels, all things Green Bay Packers, soap operas, and crafting. Kay had a true servant’s heart and gave to everyone in need. She always kept moving, and surely never gave up, and always trusted in the Lord, even in the darkest of days. Kay is survived by her Husband Michael of Columbus, her daughter, Barbara Freeman Ritchie of Williamstown, Kentucky; her son, William (Hillary) Freeman of Russell Springs, Kentucky; a brother; Frankie (Edna) Whitlock of Edinburgh, her sisters; Carolyn (Bill) Owen of Edinburgh, and Jessie Carter of Missouri. She is also survived by extended family including several nieces and nephews, and friends. Kay was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers; Robert Whitlock, William Whitlock, Ernie Whitlock, Douglas Whitlock, and Justin Whitlock, and her sisters; Joyce Everroad, and Betty Streval. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association through the funeral home. Calling hours and memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Calling hours will be held between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. with the memorial service beginning at 12 p.m. with Rev. Michael Pullens officiating. Inurnment will be held at Bethel Baptist Cemetery. I remember her coming and getting us kids to spend the night so we could go to church with her on Sunday, how she would be singing and trying to get us to sing with her, her voice was like an angel singing from above, and her laugh was so unique. And oh boy when she started chewing her gum fast, u knew hotrod was in trouble hahaha!! She tried really hard to keep in contacted with us kids, as we got older , busy making a life, we all grow apart😥. She was an amazing aunt..love u aunt Kay

    • I always love Kay she had a beautiful voice. Love going to church with her and hearing her saying around the house. What a beautiful lady.
