April 5, 1937 ~ October 20, 2023

Beverly Ann Greenwood, 86, of Indianapolis, died peacefully Friday, October 20, 2023. Beverly was born April 5, 1937, in Terre Haute, the daughter of Byron and Lucille Greenwood. She graduated from Southport High School in 1955. A star baker in the 4-H Club, she presented a beautiful cake to President Dwight Eisenhower during his visit to Indianapolis. Beverly proudly graduated from Purdue University in 1959. She was the first in her family to receive a college degree, majoring in Home Economics. Beverly was a beloved sorority sister in the Delta Epsilon Chapter of Phi Mu. She also enjoyed performing as a majorette with Purdue’s All American Band. One of her favorite events was twirling baton and marching at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. After college, Beverly taught home economics at Shelbyville High School. She later moved to Columbus, IN and spent the majority of her 35-year teaching career with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation. While teaching full-time and raising two boys, Beverly earned her master’s degree from Indiana University’s School of Education in Bloomington. She dedicated her life to teaching and helping others. Beverly enjoyed all family consumer science topics, but her passion was teaching girls in need to support themselves through the vocational education programs she developed. Her own Early Childhood Development program eventually became a pilot program for the State of Indiana. In her leisure time, Beverly enjoyed the outdoors, baking, and travel. She especially loved her many summers at the family cabin near Sioux Narrows, Ontario, Canada. She swam daily, fished for walleye, kneaded sourdough, and picked gallons of blueberries for her pies and pancakes. She taught her boys to love the outdoors and instilled in them values they hold dear today. A loving mother and grandmother, Beverly will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. A time of gathering of friends and family will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th Street, Columbus, IN. 1. She was my home ec teacher back in the late 70s at Southside Elem. loooved her sooo much. I am soo saddened to hear this news. My prayers are that her family will be comforted and know that she was one a kind in life.

    • Thank you, Connie. She was excited to teach at Southside and loved her students very much. I remember that while she taught there, she enlisted me and a buddy to make a video about table manners.

    • She was my favorite teacher. We had to make a top one semester. She also taught us how to do cross stitch so we made a pillow which I still have after 45 yrs lol. Lots and lots of laughs.

    • Always enjoyed working w/ her when she asked me to come in and assist w/ whatever project she was working on @ the time. Socialized occasionally; always fun! Dot Yeaton

    • I met Bev when we were in training to volunteer at Turning Point back in 1989, We became friends and did a lot of things together. Bev was 14 years older than me and I had a hard time keeping up with her. She knew and cared for sooo many people. She was a great role model. She loved her sons and grandchildren very much. I haven’t seen her for several years but once you know Bev you can never forget her. Rest in peace.

  2. Bev was my mentor and my friend. When I began teaching at BCSC in 1995, she took me under her wing. We shared a love for ‘the littles’ and a fierce desire to prepare early childhood educators. She passed that baton on to Kay Eagleman and myself in 1999. Columbus IN has a wonderful network of good childcare providers thanks to Bev.🥰

    • Bev was my very dear friend and will be greatly missed. I was her teacher assistant at Columbus North high school through the C4 program from 1991 until her retirement in 1999. I learned so much from her. She genuinely cared for each student. I am so happy that I got to talk to her on the telephone on October 15. Bill and Kevin and families, my heart goes out to you and you are in my prayers.

  4. Another fond memory I have of Bev is that she knew basketball great John Wooden as Johnny because he was her fat
    her’s schoolmate, teammate, and friend.
