Michael A. Owens
November 29, 1955 ~ January 30, 2024
Michael A. Owens was born to Ralph P. Owens and Margaret E. Kiel (Owens) on November 29, 1955. As a child in a military family, he also spent early years of his life living in France and Texas. He is survived by his two sisters Carol (Greg) Little of Findley, Ohio, and Janice (Jeff) Eichen of Apex, North Carolina.
Mike held various positions from 1980-2006 with Public Service Indiana/Cinergy/Duke Energy. He then worked as a System Engineer for Decatur County REMC from 2007-2014. In 2014 he became a Key Accounts Manager at Hoosier Energy, where he recently transitioned to Power Management Integration Engineer. He had a passion for power sources, an incredible gift to think outside the box, and a love for creating new designs.
He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and a graduate of St. Peter’s Lutheran School. Mike was a Life Scout and played baseball growing up. He graduated from Columbus East High School in 1974 as part of the first graduating class. After high school, Mike attended Purdue University where he was a member of Beta Sigma Psi, the Purdue Glee Club, the Hang Gliding Club, and a participant in the Grand Prix. He graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
In May of 1979 during a pickup game of basketball, Mike met his future wife, Amber E. Johnson, who survives him. After three years of dating, they married on June 26, 1982, and shared forty-one years of marriage together. They enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and attending sporting events and concerts.
Mike became a dad on June 7, 1988, to Micah (Brien) McCormick, who survives him. Mike shared his love of ice cream, rollercoasters, sports, and traveling with Micah. He was the ultimate girl dad and could often be found taking her shopping, attending dance recitals, keeping the book at her sporting events, or helping her with projects for school or 4-H.
With the birth of his grandsons Declan McCormick on December 11, 2019, and Corban McCormick on June 6, 2022, Mike officially became known as “Papaw.” In the short amount of time he was given this role, he shared a great deal of love. He quickly became the first choice for a playmate. Papaw made his boys laugh the hardest as the tickle monster and gave the best bubble baths.
He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering for the Chicago Cubs, Indianapolis Colts, and Purdue Boilermakers. He also enjoyed traveling to the beach and theme parks with his family. Mike served as an usher and communion assistant at church. He was always willing to lend a hand and help others in need. His jokes and sense of humor often filled a room with laughter. He always had the perfect words to say, story to share, or prayer to offer. Mike had a gift for making others feel loved, accepted, and valued. Mike was looking forward to spending more time with family and planning to retire this spring.
Mike is also survived by his wife’s siblings, Jennifer (George) Lockhart, Randy (Lisa) Johnson, Tammy (David) Miller, and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death, alongside his parents, is his brother-in-law, Chuck Johnson.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, arrangements for a private funeral service and burial have been made through Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
Those wishing may make memorial donations through the funeral home to the St. Paul Lutheran Early Childhood Ministries Building Fund, or the St. Peter’s Lutheran School Scholarship Fund.
You are invited to view his video tribute, light a virtual candle of remembrance, and leave a condolence message to the family online at www.jewellrittman.com.

I will always have fond memories of Mike. We were friends in high school, and we would share laughs when we would happen to see each other around town. What a great guy! I am so sorry and will be praying for peace and comfort as you travel this road. There is no doubt that he has reached his reward in heaven.
Mike and I worked closely together as on many key account projects. I got to know Mike when he worked for Decatur REMC and then he became my go to person at Hoosier Energy if I needed help with anything to do with my Key Accounts here at RushShelby Energy. Mike always had a smile on his face and a good story to share whenever we were together. I just saw him a few weeks ago at a key accounts workshop at Hoosier Energy and he was the first person I went to as I entered the room as I always enjoyed talking with him. My prayers and best wishes go out to his family. He talked to me often about them and was looking forward to spending more time with those boys. I will miss Mike. May God bless all his family at this time.

I worked with Mike for several years at Hoosier Energy. Like many others have said he always had a smile and kind words to say to absolutely anyone-the man did not discriminate. He also ALWAYS sent a Christmas card reminding folks that it was the savior’s birthday and that they were loved. My heart is hurting for those left on this earth but rejoicing that Mike is with his Heavenly Father-just too soon.
Mike was a dear friend who always was encouraging, loving and supportive. He was a great listener and a lot of fun. He loved his family deeply and was so proud of Amber and Micah. Although, we lost touch when I retired, I treasured his friendship always!
I am so sorry for your loss. Mike always lit up a room when he entered as I’m sure he has done in heaven. Love to all. Kathy Peters

I worked with Mike at Hoosier Energy and more importantly he was a friend. I am still in shock of his passing. Integrity is the word that comes to mind when I think of him. He recently sent me a quote after one of our long conversations, “As we work together to shape our future, we must always be careful not to mistake ACTIVITY for ACCOMPLISHMENT.” My deepest condolences to his family which he always spoke of with deep love and devotion. He will be greatly missed.
I worked with Mike for many years at Cinergy and PSI Energy. I have many good memories of Mike. He was a very caring and compassionate man. Family was of great importance to him. He often spoke of Amber and Micah. His interpersonal skills were exceptional. At Cinergy he applied his ability to work with others on projects within the company and externally on major projects. Mike will be sadly missed.
Our condolences to Mike’s family. I worked in the same office building with Mike during his employment with PSI/Cinergy/Duke in Columbus. We played on several basketball and softball teams during our early years. He was always the first to volunteer to help for any community service cause. BoilerUp ….RIP Mike..

I’m so sorry to hear of Mike’s passing and am sending lots of prayers and love, Amber. As you know, we worked together at PSI for many years. Mike was just a great person; held in the highest regard by all. Prayers for comfort and strength.
Mike was our key accounts manager. The memory that comes to my mind is when he found out I was going to John Mellencamp’s concert in Muncie. He shared with me that they were cousins and that he also was in a band in college, His grandson started modeling and he always shared his latest “gig” (Modeling pictures) I will miss seeing those pictures.
So verry sorry for your loss. I knew Mike through my affiliation with my local co-op and as a director on the Hoosier Energy Board. What I remember the most about Mike was his kindness and he was always smiling. Whenever I would see him, we would always visit and when we parted ways, I instantly would be more positive and upbeat. He was a kind soul, and I will miss him. Continued thoughts and prayers for your family during this difficult time.
