Fon "Popeye" Albert Lucas, 76, of Nashville, Indiana passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 in Columbus, Indiana after battling illness.
Popeye was born in Pikeville, Kentucky on November 13th, 1947. He was the second child of Roland Lucas and Fayetta (Swiney) Lucas. As a toddler Popeye moved to Indiana and through his childhood, they lived in various places throughout the state. The family moved to Nashville, Indiana when Popeye entered the 8th grade. While attending his first year at Brown County High School, Popeye enjoyed wearing a sailor hat. This earned him the nickname "Popeye" which he wore proudly for the rest of his life.
In 1974 Popeye married his first wife, Katie D. (Willis) Lucas, and they welcomed their only child on March 7th, 1983. Popeye loved being a father and spending time teaching his son his hobbies, including golfing, fishing, shooting pool, and shooting guns. Popeye's other hobbies included tennis, riding motorcycles, bird watching, and growing beautiful flowers in his garden.
After graduation, Popeye worked various jobs, but his favorite followed his biggest passion, golf. Popeye enjoyed working at various golf courses throughout his life as a groundskeeper. While working at the old Brown County Country Club he was promoted to the position of the club pro which he took much pride in. Even after retirement and poor health, Popeye couldn't leave the green. He could often be found at Salt Creek Golf Retreat in Nashville, Indiana, and thought of it as his second home.
Popeye was preceded in death by his parents Roland Lucas and Fayetta (Swiney) Lucas, his first wife Katie D. (Willis) Lucas, and his nephew James "Teddy" T. Rose. He is survived by his elder sister Katrina (Lucas) Rose, his brother-in-law Jerry Rose, his son Shawn Lucas, his daughter-in-law Danielle (Davis) Lucas, his grandson Aiden Lucas, granddaughter Kailynn Lucas and numerous nieces and nephews.
