Robert Allen Orben
August 17, 1936 ~ April 12, 2025
Robert Allen Orben, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and pillar in his community, passed away on April 14, 2025, in Columbus, Indiana, leaving behind a legacy marked by intelligence, thoughtfulness, and deep faith. Born on August 17, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, to Stanley Souza and Helena Emily Hall Orben, Bob’s life journey was a testament to his enduring commitment to family, faith, education, and service.
Family was one of the foundational pillars in Bob’s life. After tying the knot with the love of his life, Mary Foster, on May 7, 1960, Bob welcomed four children into the world: Christopher "Chip" Riis (Julie) Orben, Janet (Alan) Orben McMillan, Virginia (Gerard) Orben Stocker, and William Robert (Andrea) Orben. The joy of his life multiplied with the arrival of his thirteen grandchildren: Devon, Corrine, and Kristen Orben; Mackenzie, Cameron, Allyson, and Paige McMillan; Jacob, Daniel, and Maria Stocker; as well as Helene, Beatrice, and Reed Orben. His siblings, Jack (Patricia) Orben and Doris (Donald) Campbell, also survive him, carrying on the family's legacy of closeness and compassion.
Bob’s academic endeavors culminated with distinction, as he graduated from Lehigh University and later earned his MBA from Rutgers University before achieving his CPA certification. Serving his nation as a U.S. Army Veteran, he laid the foundation for a career marked by integrity and dedication. Throughout his career, Bob received accolades for his roles at Price Waterhouse, NCR, Cummins Engine Company, and Columbus Container.
Faith played a significant role in Bob’s life, showcased by his longtime membership and leadership at the First Presbyterian Church, including his service as a Deacon, an Elder, and head of the First Presbyterian Church Foundation. A testament to his spiritual dedication, Bob’s impact resonated within the church walls and beyond.
Bob’s devotion to supporting his community was evident in his involvement with the Mill Race Center, Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, the Columbus Regional Hospital Foundation, the Financial Executives Institute, the Columbus Area Arts Council, the Columbus Philharmonic, and his tireless efforts with the local United Way. It was this same spirit of community that brought Bob joy in sailing, water skiing, snow skiing, and tennis. He particularly enjoyed an evening cruise in his Chris Craft “At Last” with his family and a Manhattan in hand. He also enjoyed exploring the world, which took him to remarkable places like Lake Hopatcong, Skytop, London, and Egypt, as well as New York City, where he enjoyed the opera, the philharmonic, and fine dining. Each one enriches his perspective and creates cherished memories.
As Abraham Lincoln once said, "In the end, it is not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years." Bob’s days were indeed well-spent, filled with purpose and love that touched everyone he met.
The service will be held May 10th at First Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Indiana. There will be a Visitation from 10 am to 12 noon, followed by a Celebration of Life from 12 noon to 1 pm. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Robert’s memory may do so to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana, the Mill Race Center, or First Presbyterian Church Foundation through the funeral home. The Jewell–Rittman Family Funeral Home is serving the family.
Robert Allen Orben's life was a journey of accomplishment, generous service, and unfaltering love for his family and fellow man. Intelligent in thought, considerate in action, and steadfast in his faith, Bob’s story is one of a life well-lived and a legacy that will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

What a beautiful record of an amazing life! Bob Orben’s remarkable extended family is a testament to the outstanding life lessons Bob and Mary have exhibited through the years. Well done, good and faithful servant.
To Chip, Julie, Devon, Corrine and Kristen…Bob Orben was a touchstone in the lives of all he met. I appreciated his wisdom, insight, and unfailing devotion to God and especially his family. Thom and I will always cherish is friendship and especially the cruise he invited us to experience. It was my pleasure to watch Devon, Corrine and Kristen grow into spiritual individuals during my tenure as Christian Education Coordinator at First Presbyterian Church. His legacy of civic, religious and social involvement will continue through those who survive. My husband, Thomas A. Weintraut, Jr., and I will always consider Chip, Julie and their beloved children and grandchildren members of our extended family. There are words to a song which are applicable to the life of this great man…”If when you give the best of your service, carrying the staff and the battle is won. Be not dismayed when friends don’t believe you…He’ll understand…and say…’Well done!'”
Well done, Bob Orben…Very Well Done!

We met Bob and Mary Orben years ago because of a long wait time at a local restaurant. They saw us standing there, and he promptly invited us — complete strangers! — to join them. We had a wonderful evening getting to know each other. And every encounter thereafter was warm and engaging. That simple gesture spoke volumes about Bob. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Orben family, knowing that the example he set resonates throughout all those who came in contact with him.
Sincerely,
Doug and Deborah Jones
