KEITH ALAN WALTZ
Longtime motorsports journalist Keith Waltz passed away September 27, 2025 after a brief illness. Keith was born in Columbus, Indiana on April 1, 1960. His father Russell Waltz and his mother Gretchen Meyers Waltz preceded him in death.
Keith graduated from Columbus North High School in 1978 and from Ball State University in 1982 where he was a member of the Delta Chi Fraternity chapter. After graduation from BSU with a degree in journalism, Waltz began his career in the motorsports industry and was hired by legendary motorsports reporter Chris Economaki and joined the National Speed Sport News staff in Ridgewood, NJ. Keith became Associate Editor of the famed motorsports publication. In 1993, he was honored with the Frank Blunk Award for outstanding journalistic coverage of motorsports by the Eastern Morotsports Press Association.
At the end of 1993, Waltz left his post with National Speed Sport News and moved to North Carolina for a position with Cotter Communications, where he worked with Hall of Fame NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip.
In May 2000, he joined the communications team at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he was a key component in the publicity efforts of the state-of-the-art speedway and its adjacent dirt track, while working under Hall of Fame promoter H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler. In 2018, Keith returned to Speed Sport as a columnist and copy editor, while also taking on similar work for NASCAR Pole Position Magazine.
This past January, Keith was honored again by the Eastern Motorsport Press Association and received the Jim Hunter Memorial Award as writer of the year. He wrote his final Speed Sport column shortly after that.
Keith was a walking encyclopedia of all things racing. He traveled to all the NASCAR tracks and many dirt tracks and road rally locations throughout his career. He traveled to Australia and Japan to cover races. Keith had many interesting facts and so many funny stories about his career. He was an I.U. Basketball fan and a season ticket holder to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte basketball team, the 49er’s.
Keith is survived by his aunts, Marilyn Waltz, and Jennifer Meyer Garten; cousins, Tracey Owen, Arinda Bussell, Mark Meyer and Mike Goeller. He had many good friends he considered family, both in Columbus and North Carolina.
Visitation will be held Friday, October 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home, 3855 25th Street, Columbus. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinsons Awareness Foundation. I met Keith in 1988 at National Speed Sport News. One of the nicest guys I’ve ever known. A walking encyclopedia of motorsports knowledge, from sprint cars (his first love) to Nascar to motorcycles to the rally races, where he was a navigator.
He was my boss and my friend. I learned a lot from him, about racing, about journalism and about life. Was lucky enough to hang out with him last year at the World of Outlaws Finals in Charlotte. Good times.
“He went too soon,” is something we hear a lot. With Keith, we all would have said it if he’d lived to be 100.
R.I.P, Keith
❤️
Remembering Keith from our college days. A truly great guy, well-liked, always an asset. It was a pleasure to have known him. My condolences to the Waltz family.
Cousin Keith, Rest in Peace. You lived a life doing what you loved. Maybe your retirement was short-lived because you had done so much already during your career?
You and Cousin Mike always seemed like my Summer big brothers when I would visit from California. I always enjoyed seeing you, Aunt Gretchen and Uncle Russell on these trips. One of my funniest memories with you was when your dad took several of us to see Thunderbolt and Lightfoot in 1974. LOL. I was 13 and it was R-rated… Thank you, Uncle Russell !!!
I am glad you are now pain free and you can move without effort. And also, being reunited with your parents. I regret being unable to be there today but will stop by when I am next in Columbus. Take care, Keith. Our family mourns your passing…

I will always treasure the memories of spending holidays together at our grandmother’s house. Keith and I laughed, played and chased each other through the rooms, filling the house with joy and energy. I’m grateful for the time we shared and the memories that will always live in my heart.
❤️
Keith was a dear friend and fraternity brother. Although we had shared interests with similar majors at Ball State and also our shared love of racing, my most coveted tie with Keith was him serving as my best man at our wedding just over 43 years ago. RIP my friend. I am proud of the man you were and the amazing career you built.

Keith was a kind/gentle/humorous and humble person. He was a world class gentleman. I didn’t know him well as we knew each other later in life through his Dad. His Dad was so proud of his accomplishments. Special place in my heart for Keith he always sent me a Christmas card long after we had lost touch. He is dancing with Jesus now. My sincere condolences to the family.

So sorry for your family’s loss. Keith was good college friend as we lived in the same dorm–Hurst Hall and then were Delta Chi Fraternity Brothers. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Rest in peace former neighbor friend and co worker. Gone way to soon. Barely a few years older then me will miss seeing you in passing at uncc games and the notes we shared and you coming over to say hi. Ride high my friend.

Absolutely love these pictures of Keith in the video tribute—they bring back some great memories. I believe the first time I met Keith, he was working with Waltrip and they hosted a press event on the old CMS Media Tour when I was working at WBTV. Keith’s media gift was a hammer with a wooden handle, most practical media gift I ever received, and I still use it! I learned so much working with him at CMS—excellent writer and his attention to detail running the media center was unmatched. I still can’t leave a MC without straightening the chairs….
Keith was also the BEST editor I ever worked with. It became a mission of mine to write/edit/re-write an original press release just once that I could give to him to edit and get it back without his signature red pen corrections. I told him that was my mission one time—he grinned and said, “It will never happen…” And it never did….
God bless you, Keith—we’re all better because you were in our lives and God bless your family, Mike and Haven….
