Martha “Marty” S. Thomas, 78, of Columbus, died at Columbus Regional Hospital on October 29, 2025 at 8:15 a.m. surrounded by family. Marty was born on November 24, 1946 in Columbus, the daughter of William and Velma (Marr) Spies. She married Steve Thomas on January 17, 1999.
Marty was a vibrant and creative soul who expressed herself through her love of art, crafts, and jewelry. She had an eye for fashion and was known for always being stylish and put together. A devoted animal lover, she cherished her dogs and treated them like family. Marty dedicated 44 years of her life to caring for veterans at the Indianapolis VA Hospital, where her compassion, humor, and spirited personality touched countless lives. A talented cook and a generous friend, she was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back. Marty loved to travel, explore new places, and embrace life with energy and grace. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion, strength, and style that will never be forgotten.
Marty is survived by her husband, Steve Thomas; daughters, Heather (Mike) Hunter and Morgan (Tyler) Hunter both of Columbus; step-daughters, Natalie Black and Stephanie Thomas both of Columbus; grandchildren, Brent McInteer, Blake Hunter, Zayn Farr, and Skyler Hurt; great-grandchildren, Melaine McInteer, Everlie McInteer, Gunner McInteer, Walker McInteer, Lillian Hollis, and Hattalynn Hayworth.
She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Velma Spies
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bartholomew County Humane Society.
Marty’s memorial service will be at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, November 1, 2025 at Jewell Rittman Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Perkinson officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to time of the service. Honoring Marty’s request, cremation arrangements were made.
Services were entrusted to Jewell Rittman Family Funeral Home.

It was a pleasure to work with Marty at the VHA. Marty helped train me as a Voucher Examiner and she was never too busy. Marty she was so funny and she stood up for what was right, as we say, “Marty stood on business”. She loved her pets, horses, etc. I remember years ago when she got her motorcycle or shall I say her motor bike LOL. The stories she had were hilarious; she would have you on the floor laughing. Thinking of Marty puts a smile on my face, and she will truly be missed. ~Kennie
