Areta G. Gilland

Areta G. Gilland, passed away on May 5, 2026, in Columbus, Indiana, at the age of 87. She was born on December 21, 1938, in Grammer, Indiana, to the late W. David and Edythe Gates. Areta lived a life marked by gentleness, love, and quiet devotion to the people and places she held dear. Those who knew her will remember her as a kind and caring woman whose presence brought comfort and warmth to others.

On June 30, 1957, Areta was united in marriage to William J. “Bill” Gilland, who preceded her in death on March 12, 2019. Their marriage was a lasting partnership built on love, commitment, and shared years together. Through the seasons of life, Areta remained devoted to her husband and to the home they created together.

Areta was a homemaker who took great pride in caring for her home and garden. She found joy in the simple and meaningful tasks of daily life, and she tended to her surroundings with patience and grace. Her home reflected the love she poured into it, and her garden stood as a testament to her steady hands and nurturing spirit. She was the kind of person who made others feel welcome, and her gentle nature left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

She is survived by her brother, David Gates and his wife Betty, and her sister, Dorene Ward. She was preceded in death by her sister, Loretta Wire. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews, all of whom were blessed by her kindness and loving example. Family was important to Areta, and she cherished the bonds she shared with those closest to her throughout her life.

Services celebrating the life of Areta will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday May 11, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service and Crematory with her brother David Gates officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the service time on Monday. Following the service she will be laid to rest next to her husband in Garland Brook Cemetery, Garden of Gethsemane.
