Shannon Alene Prather, 53, of Columbus, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Community Hospital South. Shannon was born May 3, 1973, in Columbus, Indiana, to Terry D. Prather and Virginia A. (Stamper) Prather.
Survivors include her children, Dylan (Caitlyn) Prather and Alexis Bannister; sisters, Teresa (Scott) Nickerson and Elizabeth Foster; grandson, Noah Prather; nieces and nephews, Shelby (Brad) Menefee, Ethan Nickerson, and Mara Nickerson; as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Shannon was preceded in death by her parents, Terry and Virginia Prather.
Shannon received her associate degree from Indiana Business College and went on to work in the medical field. She spent many years caring for others as a CNA and in home health care, where she deeply enjoyed helping her patients. Shannon was also an avid dog lover who found comfort and companionship in animals throughout her life.
Shannon faced many struggles during her lifetime, yet in the weeks prior to her passing, she found God and renewed faith. Her family finds peace in knowing she is now at rest.

Funeral Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory. Calling hours will be from 1 p.m. Wednesday until service time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bartholomew County Humane Society in Shannon’s memory.

Shannon was always so kind to me. I moved mid high school and she was one of the first people to make me feel welcome. Time steals our ability to keep everyone close but she sure will be remembered. So thankful Jesus welcomed her with open arms.
I am so sorry to hear of your loss, along with your family and her friends. Your mom was always the sweetest to me and ALWAYS beamed with pride when she spoke of you.
Her greatest accomplishment was her children and she never failed to brag about you – during your senior year when you raised money for the K-9 program, when you shadowed in dispatch when we all got to know you as future Deputy Prather, during your time at IUC, and when you officially became an officer for Bartholomew County. She beamed again the last time I saw her about 9-12 months ago, talking about how you made your dreams come true – *YOU* were a K-9 officer! She was SO proud of you.

I as well got to know her by going into Circle. She was always so pleasant. Very sweet lady. RIP Beautiful
