Dad will forever be missed by so many, but not a day will go by that he won’t somehow, some way, remind us just how profound his impact was on everyone from his past. I will forever miss dad, but I know how happy he is to be reunited with mom, for eternity.

Lonnie C. Hembree, 87, died at home on July 1, 2026, with family at his side. Lonnie was born in Pineville, Kentucky on January 25, 1939, to Della Mae Golden Hembree and Allery Hembree. On March 20, 1964, he married Sharon K. Ping, in Columbus. She preceded him in death in May 2021. Lonnie is survived by two sons, Tim Hembree of Columbus, Kenny Hembree (Ruth) of Scipio and a daughter, Dolores Keating (Craig) of Toledo, Ohio.
Lonnie loved being a grandparent to five grandchildren, Chris Hembree, Megan Schott (Devin), Genalea Cross (Brandon), Shelby Sandberg (Joe) and Jeremy Johnson and 11 great-grandchildren.
Lonnie co-founded the first Chartered Mustang club in the state, The Hoosier Mustang Club, in 1978. In 2023 he was inducted into the Gale Halderman Mustang Club Hall of Fame in Tipp City, Ohio by Ford Perfomance of Dearborn, Michigan. Lonnie shared his love of Mustangs with his family and was a club member for 48 consecutive years. He was known over the years for his classic cars, but mostly his Mustangs. Lonnie also enjoyed a lifelong natural talent of playing most stringed instruments put in his hands. He shared his love for music with his family and spent the last 5 years helping in his son’s music store.
To know Lonnie was to love him. He was a gentle soul who lived for his family and friends. He would do anything for them, including spending the last 10 years of his life, taking care of his wife, who was battling cancer.
Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. noon on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory, 3855 25th St. Columbus, IN 47203 with Larry Perkinson officiating. Calling will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Sandcreek Azalia Friends Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at CRH and Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana for their support in his care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hoosier Mustang Club in care of the funeral home.
