Ralph Lee Jewell

Ralph L. Jewell, aged 95 of Columbus, Indiana, passed away on July 19th at 8:54pm at Four Seasons Healthcare Center.

Ralph Jewell was born August 17, 1930, in Columbus, Indiana to Arthur Jewell and Edith Gates-Jewell. He follows his wife of 35 years, Maureen T. Jewell in death. He is survived by his son Gregory P. Jewell of Philadelphia, PA, daughters Amy L. Jewell of Columbus and Cynthia L. Jewell of Indianapolis, and grandchildren Benjamin E. Matheny of Columbus and Travis Jewell of Philadelphia, PA, and MaryBeth Matheny-Jones (spouse, Joshua Jones) of Indianapolis, and Timothy Martin and Sylvia Martin of Indianapolis.

Ralph graduated from Columbus High School in 1948 and from Indiana University School of Law in 1957. He graduated from the United States Air War College and worked as a judge advocate for the United States Air Force Service. He saw active deployment during the Cuban Missile Crisis and retired as a full colonel after 30 years of service.

He worked as an attorney in the Columbus area for 29 years and was a founding member of Jewell, Crump, Angermeier, and Prall. He served as the Bartholomew County Prosecuting Attorney from 1964-1968. He was active in several local organizations including Kiwanis and Elks Clubs. He enjoyed snow skiing, riding motorcycles (with the Whispering Eagles), and traveling. He and Maureen traveled to all 50 U.S. States and 29 foreign countries and most loved Australia and Key West, Florida.

Calling hours are from 1-2pm on Saturday, July 25th at Four Seasons Retirement Center Chapel with the funeral following from 2pm-3pm. He will be interred graveside with full military honors on Monday, July 27th at 10am in Garland Brook Cemetery.
