Patricia Jean Hampton, 82, of Columbus, passed away July 20, 2026 at Independence Village Senior Living of Columbus. She was born in Cullman, AL, on December 1, 1943 to T. Amon Sterling and Bonnie Jean Moorehead Sterling. Patricia married Dale Junior Hampton on August 22, 1969.
Patricia carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life, and those who knew her best will remember her as a woman of grace, humility, and steadfast devotion. She lived a life marked by service to others, a deep love for the Lord, and a sincere commitment to the people and places that mattered most to her.
She graduated from Columbus High School in 1961, beginning a lifelong journey of responsibility and perseverance. After completing her education, Patricia devoted more than 30 years of service to her career in banking, where she retired as a bank manager from Home Federal Bank. Her work ethic, professionalism, and dependable nature earned the respect of coworkers and customers alike. She approached her responsibilities with care and integrity, and she was known for the calm confidence and thoughtful leadership she brought to her role.
Beyond her professional life, Patricia was deeply involved in her church and found great purpose in serving others through her faith. She taught children’s church and volunteered in various church duties, always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Her love for the Lord was evident in the way she lived each day, and her gentle spirit reflected the values she held dear. She was a faithful servant whose actions spoke as clearly as her words, and she leaves behind a lasting example of Christian devotion.
Patricia also had a lifelong appreciation for antiques and the beauty of well-loved, meaningful things. She enjoyed discovering pieces with history and character, and she took pleasure in the stories they seemed to hold. She had a green thumb and found joy in caring for plants, nurturing them with patience and attention. Her interests reflected her personality, which was both thoughtful and tender, with an eye for detail and a heart that appreciated the simple blessings of life.
Patricia’s life was a testament to the value of hard work, service, and devotion. She balanced her many roles with care and carried herself with a spirit that was both gentle and steadfast. Whether in the workplace, in church, or in the everyday rhythms of life, she gave of herself generously and without hesitation. Her example will continue to inspire those who remember her.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Though her earthly journey has ended, the memory of Patricia Jean Hampton will remain a source of comfort and gratitude to those who knew and loved her. Her faith, her kindness, and her enduring spirit will not be forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory with John Barrett officiating. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Patricia will be laid to rest beside her husband Dale at Old Union Cemetery, Edinburgh, IN.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Old Union Cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Gary Dale (Lisa) Hampton of Columbus, IN; daughter, Sherry (Derek) Whitehead of Columbus, IN; brothers, Bob (Ann) Sterling of Columbus, IN, and Larry (Carol) Sterling of FL; sister, Brenda Feltner of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Liza Blandford, Katelyn Barton, Carson Whitehead, Reece Whitehead, Justin Hampton, Lindsay Hampton, Sydney Hampton, Jason Hampton and Candice (Corey) Nentrup; also survive by several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Hampton on January 19, 2011; father, T. Amon Sterling; mother, Bonnie Jean Hoffman; son, Gary Lynn Hampton; brother, Donald Sterling and a sister, Judy Ratliff.
