Joseph Lee Welmer, age 72, of Terre Haute, Indiana, and formerly of Seymour, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026.
Joe was born on May 27, 1954, in Seymour to the late Forrest and Betty (Ellis) Welmer. He graduated from Seymour High School in 1972 before earning his degree from Gem City College in Quincy, Illinois. For decades, Joe carried on the legacy of Welmer Jewelry Store, a beloved family business started by his parents in 1945, serving his community with dedication until his retirement in 2017.
Deeply creative and artistic, Joe found great joy in cooking and oil painting. He possessed a passionate eye for beauty, which shone through in his love for flowers and landscaping. For many years, Joe lived on Lutheran Lake, which was truly his happy place. While Joe proudly marched to the beat of his own drum, he possessed an unmistakable heart of gold that was charming to many who knew him.
Joe is survived by his loving sister, Rita (the late Randall) Dettmer; his nephew, Jeff (Jennifer) Dettmer; his nieces, Amanda (Brad) Helt and Carla (Matt) Harden; as well as a cherished host of great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Betty. For the last ten years, Joe has enjoyed living with and being cared for by his good friends, Taylor Johnson and Tyler Johnson in Terre Haute.
According to Joe’s wishes, cremation will take place at the Bartholomew County Crematory by Jewell – Rittman, 980 S. Marr Road. All services will be held privately. Visit www.JewellRittman.com to share a favorite memory or to sign the online guest registry.
