A. Dale Sovern

A. Dale Sovern, 93, of Columbus, IN, passed away July 31, 2026. He was born on October 8, 1932 in Clear Springs, IN, to Paul James Sovern and O. Louise Flynn Sovern. He married Wilma Joyce Hanner on December 21, 1957.

Dale proudly served his country as an Air Force veteran, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty and commitment to something greater than himself. After his military service, Dale built a long and honorable career as a union carpenter. He retired from Force Construction, where his work and reputation spoke for themselves. Even after retirement, he did not slow down for long. He continued doing carpentry work and building homes, remaining active in the trade he knew so well and took such pride in throughout his life.

Faith was also an important part of Dale’s life. He was a member of the 25th St. Church of Christ, where he found fellowship and a spiritual home. His connection to the church reflected the values he held close throughout his life, including devotion, service, and kindness.

Outside of work and church, Dale found joy in simple pleasures, especially in tending his gardens. He was known for having the best gardens, and he took great satisfaction in watching things grow under his care.

A Memorial Service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory with Greg Walker officiating. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. Tuesday until service time at the funeral home.

Survivors include his children, Mark Sovern and Anita Jo Barker both of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Lindsey Sovern and Tyler Barker; 4 great grandchildren and son-in-law, Daniel Barlow of Columbus, IN.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Wilma Joyce Sovern on March 27, 2015; a daughter, Dana Barlow; son-in-law, Robert Barker; Sisters, Barbara Lane and Sue Sawyer.
