Helen Marie Janes

Helen Marie Janes, 98, known to all as Marie, passed away on September 4, 2026. Born February 28, 1928, in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the oldest of five children and was raised in Edmonton, Kentucky. Marie spent most of her life in Columbus, Indiana, where she built a legacy of hard work and dedication over the years, working as a seamstress for the Roviar Sewing Factory and for Columbus Regional Hospital, and later as a baker for McDowell Elementary School.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Katina Sadtler, and son-in-law John; her son, Larry Janes; her sister, Linda, with whom she shared a close and lifelong bond; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; her son, Gary Janes; and three of her siblings.

Marie was deeply devoted to New Life Missionary Baptist Church, which she considered her family, and she poured that same love into her home — she took great joy in cooking, baking, gardening, and singing.

Marie will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to her faith and family, and a lifetime of quiet, hard work that touched everyone around her.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory. The service will begin at 3 p.m., with Pastor Scott Harper officiating. Burial will follow in Garland Brook Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, in care of the funeral home. Guestbook

  1. I love you grandma Marie. You were truly a good soul through and through. You will be always remembered and forever missed.

  2. A lot of great memories of Marie and Curtis. They came down to KY and visited a lot and we came up to IN during revivals and visited them a lot too when I was a kid. She was always so sweet.

  3. Your soft sweet voice and that cute little giggle will forever be missed! You were always so happy. Always had something positive to say. I loved taking care of you at Traditions. On the nights that I worked 3rd shift you always made sure I knew that your bed was open to share if I got tired lol. Love you sweet Marie!

  4. I miss you Marie. You were the sweetest! I’ll never forget the special moments we had to have a conversation or to just be there for you to help with simple things. Fly high Marie!
