William Vern “Bill” Bailey, 88, of Columbus, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Schneck Medical Center. Bill was born in Franklin, Indiana, on February 11, 1938, to Leroy and Virginia Bailey. He married Betty Jean Flynn in 1973.
Bill retired from Arvin Industries after nearly 50 years of dedicated service, a career that reflected his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to doing his best in all that he undertook.
A faithful member of the Pentecostals of Nashville, Bill found strength and fellowship in his church community. His faith was an important part of his life, and he valued the encouragement, worship, and companionship he shared with others there.
Bill enjoyed a number of pastimes that brought him happiness throughout his life. He liked bowling, watching westerns, and playing cards, and he especially appreciated the sound and spirit of bluegrass music. He was also a devoted Indiana University basketball fan and followed the team with enthusiasm. Among the things he treasured most was his 1988 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, which he loved and took great pride in.
The family would like to extend a special thank-you to Bill’s caregivers, Debbie, Tyrone, and Kendra, for their dedicated care and compassion, which helped make it possible for him to remain at home for several months. The family also expresses its sincere gratitude to The Lutheran Home for the excellent care Bill received and to the girls in the memory care unit at Silver Oaks for their kindness.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, September 21, 2026, at Jewell-Rittman Funeral Service & Crematory, with Pastor Raymond Dupree officiating. Calling hours will be from 11 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home. Bill will be laid to rest at Garland Brook Cemetery beside his wife, Betty.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Pentecostals of Nashville or Our Hospice of South-Central Indiana.

We are thankful for the friendship we all had. Lots of fun times on vacations. The time we lost Gene and Bill at Niagra Falls, they had their raincoats on we did not recognize them and they were standing beside us. we had a good laugh at that. we attended church for several years together. God is good,! Now Bill can be with Betty again. David you and Tammy has done a great job taking care of Bill. I’m sure your Mom would be proud of you both. Gene and Libby
