Anna E. Byrd, 94, of Forest Drive, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011, at her home. She married James N. Byrd Sr., in New Albany in November of 1939 and they were married until his passing in 1998. They were members of First Christian Church since 1942. During her membership, she was active in the Bible school programs and volunteered in many areas of the church through the years.
Anna was born to Cuba and Francis Kookendoffer in New Albany, Indiana, November 7, 1916. The man who raised her with her mother, however, was her stepfather, Frank Green, who she lovingly referred to as Daddy.
Ann worked at Brocks Sales and Service as a bookkeeper and product demonstrator until she became one of the owners at the passing of Alberta Brock-Shaw. She was active in the Little Theatre and played in several productions through the 1940s. She also loved volunteering at Columbus Regional Hospital in the 1940s. She and her husband,Jim, were members of the organ club in Columbus and played at many of the local nursing homes. They also were active in Arthur Murrays dance club, hosting many dance practice sessions in their home, and with close friends danced their way across Indiana.
She was a member of the Zonta Sorority, an avid bridge player and played in her card club until just a year ago. She loved the sport of golf and was a member of the womens golf league at the City Municipal Golf Course for years. Her hobbies were playing the piano and organ, reading, working in her flower gardens and yard, knitting, quilting and various crafts.
Surviving are her two children, James N. Byrd Jr. and Nancy Jane Fox (Randy), both of Columbus; a sister, Jean Morris of Colonial Heights, VA; four grandchildren, Kelley Gonsior (Jesse) of Columbus, Julie Asher (Tim) of Branson, MO, Jane Moisica (Stephen) of Columbus, Jeni Moffatt (Brad) of Columbus; 10 great-grandchildren, Marlee Gonsior, Aiden Gonsior, Jenna Baker-Asher, Jordan Baker-Asher, Jayden Asher, Olivia Moisica, Jack Moisica, Noah Moisica, Zarek Moffatt and Katherine Kinsel Moffatt; her two dogs, Peppy and Zadie; and lastly, caregivers who were like family, Linda Tabor of North Vernon, Beverly Thompson of Indianapolis, Jan Spears of Columbus, Linda Hillen of Columbus, Misty Gilhan of Columbus, Janet Griffen of Columbus, and the Hospice team, especially Cindy and Leilah.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cuba and Frank Green of Clarksville; her father, Francis Kookendoffer of St. Petersburg, Va.; her husband, Jim; brothers, Frank Green and George Green of Clarksville; and a sister, Magdalene Farmer of Clarksville.
Funeral Information
FUNERAL: Will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Dan Wallace officiating.
VISITATION: Will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday, May 13, 2011 at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
BURIAL: Garland Brook Cemetery.
