Basil R Brummet August 8, 1924 - May 23, 2020 Basil R Brummet, 95, passed from this life at Life Care Hospice in Wooster, OH after being debilitated by a fall in his home in Columbus on March 26, 2020 that resulted in a vertebral compression fracture. Born in Indianapolis, IN to James and Ethel Brummet, he grew up in Helmsburg, IN on a small farm and lived all of his adult life in Columbus, IN. Basil served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Cuyama as a Gunner’s Mate, 3rd class, and was discharged on Valentine’s Day, 1946. He came home to take up his life-long vocation as a tool & die maker at Product Engineering Company (PECO). He became Vice President at Hartup Tool & Die, and subsequently formed BB&H Tool, Inc. with with two partners. He retired in 1986. Basil never gave up his passion as a “maker” continuing in his basement to create beautiful folding knives and carving knifes, to repair and build clocks, including a beautiful handmade wooden works clock. It was his pride and joy. He enjoyed his computer and iPad for looking at historic and military websites and keeping track of his finances. Basil took the September 2014 Indiana Honor Flight to Washington, DC, receiving his WWII Veteran’s cap which he proudly wore ever since. Basil and his wife of 72 years, Vera, enjoyed their 29 winters in Sarasota, FL where they lived in Park East Club. They were a fixture of the Park participating in the weekly Saturday breakfast get togethers and programs. Basil helped many friends at Park East - he could always fix anything. He loved to fish - whether in a pond, a lake, or the Gulf of Mexico. He had many great fishing buddies and lots of fish stories and pictures. Visiting Siesta Key Beach with Vera, feeding the seagulls, and traveling around Florida were highlights. They enjoyed several cruises in the Caribbean, to Hawaii, and to Alaska in 2000 with their daughter and son-in-law. The next year they all made a wonderful trip to London and Paris. Basil was a long time member of St. John’s Lodge of Free & Accepted Masonry in Columbus and attained the 32nd Degree of The Scottish Rite in the Indianapolis Valley. He was a member of the East Columbus United Methodist Church and Fidelis Bible class. He enjoyed riding with the Whispering Eagles motorcycle “gang” until age 80. Basil and Vera enjoyed square dancing in Columbus and Sarasota. They loved their daughter’s and son-in-law’s Samoyed dogs and alpacas, attending many shows together. Basil Brummet never met a stranger, he was an eternal optimist with a winning smile and a generous heart. People gravitated to Basil and enjoyed his stories of growing up in Brown County, of serving in the Navy, of his work as a tool & die maker, and of all the animals and people he loved. Most of all Basil loved his wife Vera and his daughter Shauna, her husband Jeff, and his little dogs Winkie and Diamond. He wil be missed by so very many people. Basil is survived by his wife, Vera and daughter Shauna Renea Brummet and her husband, Jeffrey A Skinner. Surviving relatives include several nephews and nieces and their children. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry for your loss, Basil was so kind when he would call on the phone. and he always made me laugh. Although, I never got to meet him, he had sent me a picture of him and his beautiful wife Vera. He wanted me to see who I was speaking with on the phone. I have the photo hanging up at my desk. I hope the time spent together and the memories created will help you though these times. With Deepest Sympathies Dee Stone – Southern Trust Financial.

  2. My deepest condolences to the family of Basil, particularly his wife Vera and my dear friends Shauna and Jeff. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. I always admired his inquiring mind and gentle nature. Love to you all at this difficult time. Lori

  3. Basil was an amazing and accomplished man,and was married to the love of his life for 72 years. Wow! Often times neighbors and friends don’t recognize the passion that some people have for life until you read it in the newspaper. It appears that he didn’t sit idly around watching the world go by. Basil had so many different life experiences, and truly lived by the saying “Variety Is The Spice Of Life”. I can’t believe that he left many untouched items on his personal bucket list and enjoyed telling everyone he knew about his many adventures!
Vera and Shauna,I am so very sorry for your loss. Debbie Jackson Mikolaitis

  4. I met Basil and Vera on a summer day several years ago while walking my tinny dog in our neighborhood. When I walked by their house, I saw them sitting outside under the carport. They immediately started pointing at my tinny dog, Runtcy, with big smiles on their faces. Without even thinking, I walked up to them, so they could see Runtcy who looks like a little fox! We ended up talking for hours, and that is how we randomly became best friends. I would call them and go see them as often as I could. Over time, I got to hear all kinds of wonderful stories about their lives, of which I could never get enough! They loved dogs, so I’d sometimes bring my dogs along to entertain a little. Basil and Vera became my adoptive grand-parents in my heart, what a wonderful couple I somehow was blessed to meet! They have been an inspiration. God bless their hearts!

  5. Our deepest condolences to Vera and your family. We have many happy memories of spending time together and the many fishing trips with Basil. He sure knew how to find the fish and could clean them faster and better than anybody else. He will be so missed by us and all our friends at Park East Club in Sarasota. Basil made a very unique latch for our shed door and we continue to think of him every time we use the latch. He was such a blessing to so many people. Our prayers are with you Vera, that you may continue to feel the strength from our Lord during this time and always.
    Your Colorado friends,

  7. We were sad to learn of Basil’s passing when we saw his obituary posted in the Park East Clubhouse. Basil and our dad, Vincent “Sparkie” Roth were fishing buddies and good friends. We shared fun times with Basil and Vera over many years at Park East. Basil’s warm smile and generosity came through in so many ways. Remembering pontoon rides, fishing and funny story telling are just a few of our precious memories. Below is a picture taken in 1988 from my parents 41st wedding anniversary celebration. We think an appropriate toast to Basil would be, “Here’s to a life well lived”!

  8. I am so sorry to hear of his passing such a short time ago. My father who is 97 and still with us, also served on the Cuyama in WWII and was great friends with Basil-I have photos here of the two of them together and just happened to look up his name today. May he rest in Peace.
