Charles Franklin "Doug" Gatewood September 16, 1923 - February 25, 2011 Charles Doug Gatewood, 87, of Fairfax Drive, died at 8:45 a.m. Friday, February 25, 2011, at his home. He was born September 16, 1923, the son of Gilbert and Emma Hutton Gatewood. He married Patricia M. Motley November 9, 1947. Charles attended First Baptist Church of Columbus for many years. He spent over 30 years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Lt. Col. He flew 35 combat missions with the 8th Air Force in a B-17 during World War II. He received six air medals and various other campaign and service awards during his military career. Upon retirement from the military, he moved to Columbus and became a personnel manager for Saps Bakery which later became Beatrice Foods. After 12 years of service, he retired for a second time in January, 1983. He is survived by sons, Richard L. and Garry Wayne Gatewood, both of Columbus; a daughter, Sandra Nelson of Greenwood; grandchildren, Jennifer Banks, Douglas Gatewood, Kelli Jo Gatewood, Kristopher Allen Gatewood and Nicole Nelson; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Bill (Sandy) Gatewood, Jim (Beverly) Gatewood, Jack (Judy) Gatewood and Gail (Betty) Gatewood, all of Westport; and a sister, Doris (Joe) Osterman of Clearwater, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on August 21, 2010; a grandchild, Sean Dobbins; four brothers and three sisters.
