Damon L. Jones Sr. November 12, 1938 - July 17, 2010 Damon L. Jones Sr., 71, of Road 100W, died at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, at his home. Mr. Jones attended State Street School, was captain of the school crossing guards and played on the basketball team. He accepted Christ as his Savior while in high school. He earned his GED while stationed in Japan with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed at Cummins for 31 years, retiring in 1990, and after retirement was employed at Hawes Office Equipment. Mr. Jones served as president of Wayne School PTO and served on the committee for its annual fund raising smorgasbord. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years with his oldest son receiving the rank of Eagle Scout. Damon opened the Guthrie Scout Trail where Scouts came from all over the U.S. to hike. He logged the second highest number of miles hiked in the U.S. and also attended Wood Badge in Wisconsin. Mr. Jones was an Awana Leader, Bible quiz coach and drove the luggage van to Schroon Lake, NY, yearly for Word of Life International Team Involved. He was the assistant Bible quiz coach for Teens Involved, a Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. Damon was an assistant Little League Baseball coach and was a volunteer van driver to take disabled veterans to the V.A. hospital. He loved flea markets, attending state fairs across the country and was an avid Hallmark collector. He was a member of the U.S. Postal Service Auxiliary Firm. Mr. Jones was a supporter for the humanitarian project and local campaign manager for George Wallace when he ran for President. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Marine Corps League. Born in Columbus, Nov. 12, 1938, Mr. Jones was the son of Daniel L. and Cinda P. Fields Jones. He married Helen Elizabeth Posey Nov. 20, 1957. Survivors include his wife; sons, Damon Jr. (Lisa) Jones of Houston, TX, Timothy Jones of Nashville, IN, and Matthew Jones of Columbus; daughters, Susan (Tim) Elkins of Columbus, IN, Sherl Jones of Columbus, IN, and Teresa (Dennis) Burton of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Ben Jones, Damon Jones III, Danyel Jones, Phillip (Heather) Jones, Kelli Jones, Breanna Mahoney, Zachary Burton and Autumn Elkins; great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Chesney and Gaby, Luc; and brothers, Norval Jones of Greensburg, KY, and Robert Jones of Terre Haute, IN. Funeral Information FUNERAL: 10:30 a.m. Friday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Day Sr. officiating. CALLING: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday.
