Dempsey was born December 29, 1964, in Bartholomew County, the son of Hermon E. and Martha Ferguson Grissom. He married Christy Grissom November 28, 1984. Dempsey was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Lewis, Washington, with the 9th Chemical Company. He had been an employee of Faurecia since 1989. He liked riding his Harley and enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home. Calling will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery with military honors presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association through the funeral home. Survivors include his wife, Christy; daughter, Sierra (Chad) Lininger of Columbus; sisters, Pat (Junior) Parnell of Greensburg, Kentucky, Bertha (Steve) Ketchum of Indianapolis; half-brothers, Charlie Grissom and James Grissom, both of Indiana; half-sisters, Carolyn Welch and LaWanda Jones, both of Indiana; granddaughters, Katie Lininger and Macaelah Grissom; uncles, Dempsey Ferguson of Columbus and Bud Ferguson of Illinois; sister-in-law, Candi (Keith) Burton of Columbus; mother-in-law, Bea Garrison of Columbus; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael Grissom; brothers, Robert B. Grissom and Kevin Grissom; grandparents, Clarence Ferguson, Willie Grissom, Bertha Fields Grissom and Lavon Ferguson Stillinger and a nephew, Robert H. Grissom.
