Donald Irvin Lucas, 71, of Columbus, died at 10:16 a.m. on October 12, 2025 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Don was born on March 12, 1954 in Columbus, the son of Malcum Lucas and Maude (Bradley) Lucas. He married Ruth Ann Schwering on August 13, 1976. Don was a proud graduate of Columbus North High School and spent many dedicated years working at Dolly Madison Bakery before retiring, later continuing his hard work with B.C.S.C. He was an avid NASCAR fan who loved spending time outdoors, whether mowing yards, fixing mowers or four-wheelers, or simply enjoying nature. Donald had a deep appreciation for country and bluegrass music, and you could often find him with an ice-cold Coca-Cola in hand. Above all, he was a number one husband, dad, and grandfather, his greatest joy came from the love and laughter he shared with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Lucas; daughters, Tracy Schwering, Janice (Bryan) Root both of Columbus, and Dawn (Mike) Isaacs of Edinburgh; sisters, Brenda Mace, Sue (Jesse) Gentry, Diane (Joe) East, Linda Jessie, and Sharon (Dale) Graham all of Columbus; sister-in-law, Belinda Lucas; grandchildren, Tyler Barr, Autumn Chandler, Jackson Isaacs, Abbey Isaacs, Savannah Root, Sydney Root, Brianna Isaacs, Landon Root, Addison Isaacs, and Malcolm Isaacs; great-grandchildren, Kristopher Chandler, Braylee Chandler, Esther Barr, Xander Chandler, and Dallas Isaacs. He is preceded in death by his parents, Malcum and Maude Lucas; step-mom, Arlene Lucas; brother, Larry Lucas; sister, Barbara Richards; brothers-in-law, Melvin Mace, Jim Richards, and Robert Jessie; and great grandson, Owen Chandler. The funeral service for Don will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Collett officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until time of the service. Burial will be held at Garland Brook Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home for funeral expenses.   1. Don was an amazing man. He was like another dad to so many. He is going to be missed so much. My condolences go out to the family. There will never be anyone like Don.

  2. Don was such a kind man and a very good worker. He was working at North High School when I taught there and we always would chit chat about stuff. He never seemed anything but positive about everything. May be RIP! Condolences to the family!
