Jim Pursley FINAL RESTING PLACE: Garland Brook Cemetery VISITATION: 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home Donald Louis “Louie” Cardinal, 87, of Columbus, died at 10:40 p.m. May 26, 2019, at Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility. Louie was born April 22, 1932, in Dupont, Indiana, the son of Leonard Louis and Virginia M. Brown Cardinal.  He married Betty Jean Oliver April 9, 1954, and she preceded him in death on January 7, 2018. He retired from the Columbus Fire Department, Station 2, after 20 years of service. He loved his time with the fire department where he and Leon Schlehuser were the last to drive the Stutz fire truck before it was retired from service. Louie was also active with the Fireman’s Cheer Fund. Louie was an Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He farmed for many years and enjoyed his tractors. He and Betty enjoyed vacationing at Anna Marie Island in Florida. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2019, at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Pursley officiating. Following the service, Louie will be transported to Garland Brook Cemetery on the Columbus Fire Department’ Stutz fire truck to be laid to rest next to his wife Betty.  Military graveside honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Calling will be 4 to 7 p.m.Thursday and one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana in memory of Louie. Survivors include his sons, Charles (Jean) Cardinal and Daniel (Teresa) Cardinal, both of Columbus and a daughter, Gloria (Jeffrey) Voelz of Columbus; brother, Keith Thompson of Columbus; grandchildren, Liza (Shawn) Spencer, Clinton Cardinal, Valerie Voelz, Grant (Jenna) Voelz and Mitchell (Courtney) Cardinal; and great-grandchildren, Summer, Sierra and Savannah Spencer, Cameron Cardinal, and Vivian, Isabelle, Leonidas and Chloe Voelz. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Cardinal and Virginia Thompson; his wife, Betty and a brother, Dwight Cardinal.
